About the role

The position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements as outlined by VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned clients while developing technical competencies.
  • Affirms age-specific components during assessments, planning, implementing, and evaluating care.
  • Administers medications and provides care supportive to life and well-being, including health teaching and counseling.
  • Collaborates with an interdisciplinary team to provide optimal, patient-driven support.
  • Coordinates care among caregivers and participates in quality care improvement activities.
  • Influences outcomes by engaging in shared decision-making to promote a shared governance environment on the unit.
  • Serves in rotational charge nurse coverage, directing team leads and members in the provision of patient care.
  • Creates daily assignments for staff across all shifts, ensuring consistency with appropriate staffing levels.
  • Attends interdisciplinary team rounds, participates in shift huddles, and acts as a direct point of contact for medical providers.

Requirements

  • English Language Proficiency: No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by ACEN or CCNE. Possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Experience: Physical Rehabilitation and/or restorative nursing experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • Basic Requirements: Graduates of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by ACEN or CCNE. Possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements but do not possess the required licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis).
  • Grandfathering Provision: All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification.
