Registered Nurse - Cardiovascular Procedure Unit
About the Role
The Cardiovascular Procedure Unit (CPU) is a specialized area where patients are prepared for cardiac procedures and monitored during recovery. The CPU team provides comprehensive pre- and post-procedure care for patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures, including cardiac catheterizations, angiograms, PCI/stent placements, electrophysiology procedures, and structural heart interventions.
This position involves 8-hour shifts and plans, coordinates, and implements care for adult patients in the Cardiac Cath Lab. The role ensures quality care is provided efficiently and safely, consistent with unit standards, and demonstrates competency skills appropriate to the clinical area.
Responsibilities
- Performs on the Cath Lab procedure team as circulator, scrub, or monitor.
- Ensures patient is correctly prepped for procedures in holding and verifies timely availability of needed information, such as history and physical (H&P).
- Utilizes critical judgment to analyze patient assessments, administers medications (including for critically ill patients), and reports abnormal information to physicians promptly.
- Performs hemostasis safely and properly, with or without vascular devices.
- Routinely enters patient orders and checks charges for accuracy.
- Provides care for critically ill patients, functioning independently in stressful situations.
- Educates patients and families based on assessed needs, documents education provided, and keeps them informed about tests and treatments.
- Provides clear patient instruction on what to expect during perioperative procedures.
- Assists families by escorting them to the cardiology or Cath lab area when necessary.
- May perform point-of-care testing according to policies and procedures.
- Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or education equivalency for licensing.
- No prior experience required.
Physical Requirements
- Constant use of speech to share information through oral communication.
- Constant standing and walking.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
- Frequent sitting, reaching, and keyboard use/data entry.
- Frequent use of vision and depth perception for near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) distances, and ability to identify and distinguish colors.
- Frequent use of smell to detect or recognize odors.
- Frequent use of hearing to receive oral communication, distinguish body sounds, and hear alarms or malfunctioning machinery.
- Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
- Occasional lifting or moving of patients.
- Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping, and repetitive foot/leg or hand/arm movements.
- Occasional driving.
- Rare crawling and running.
