About the Role
A perioperative nurse is a registered nurse (R.N.) who works in the operating room, caring for patients before, during, and after surgery. Sometimes called a surgical or operating room nurse, this specialized nurse may serve as a scrub nurse—selecting and passing instruments and supplies used for the operation—or as a circulating nurse, managing overall nursing care in the operating room and helping maintain a safe, comfortable environment. The surgical unit includes Day Surgery, PACU, Central Supply, Perioperative Services, and Surgical Clinic.
Mandatory overtime is an essential function of this position. Applicants must successfully complete a criminal background check and a chemical urinalysis and breath analysis drug screening test. All employees are subject to drug testing for probable cause as set forth in agency and bureau policies. Welch Community Hospital is a tobacco-free campus.
Responsibilities
- Work with patients prior to surgery to complete paperwork and help answer questions or calm fears about surgery.
- Monitor a patient’s condition during and after surgery.
- Select and pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during operation (scrub nurse role).
- Manage overall nursing care in the operating room to maintain a safe and comfortable environment (circulating nurse role).
- Educate patients on best practices for recovery, including pain management and keeping wounds clean.
- Clean surgical equipment and operating rooms to maintain a sterile environment.
Requirements
- Current West Virginia license or temporary permit to practice as a registered nurse.
