Registered Nurse

About the Role

The Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care in an assigned clinic or clinical area of oncology and infusion patients within Bon Secours Charity Health System. They deliver direct nursing care by assessing patient needs, performing physical examinations, and collecting health history and demographic information. The role involves planning, developing, implementing, administering, and evaluating specialized treatment plans and preventive care regimens in accordance with medical orders and nursing standards. Responsibilities also include annotating medical records, implementing infection control protocols, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Performs all aspects of IV therapy, including hydration, chemotherapy/biotherapy, and blood products, following established patient safety and professional nursing procedures.
• Develops a plan of care consistent with the patient's condition, annotates medical records per established procedures and regulatory requirements, and communicates information to clinical and support staff to ensure proper nursing care.
• Includes patients and their families in care planning.
• Performs comprehensive patient assessments, monitors improvements or deterioration in patient conditions, and implements and evaluates nursing care accordingly.
• Assesses patients and administers treatments, medications, and general care according to the nursing plan, best practices, established protocols, and medical orders to address actual or potential disorders and optimize well-being.
• Operates specialized medical equipment.
• Evaluates and documents patient responses to care, updates or modifies interventions on the nursing plan, and collaborates with physicians to revise treatment plans as needed.
• Collaborates with healthcare team members (e.g., LPNs, nurses' aides, attendants) to coordinate patient care.
• Coordinates care with other departments (e.g., dietary, social services, rehab services) to ensure timely service delivery.
• Provides education to patients and families about medications, medical treatments, disease-specific information, and follow-up care.
• Resolves conflicts and advocates for patient rights, ensuring continuity and understanding of care.
• Participates in Quality Assurance activities to ensure optimal care and follow-up for patients.
• Ensures continuity of care by communicating comprehensive hand-offs during transitions (e.g., shift changes, transfers).
• Participates in a multi-disciplinary approach to nursing care.
• Engages in continuing education programs and in-service training to provide appropriate nursing care and completes programs on time.
• Complies with hospital policies and procedures and actively participates in performance improvement processes, including data collection, analysis, and implementation of changes.
• Precepts and mentors newer staff on the assigned unit.
• Attends staff meetings and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• 1 year of Oncology experience required.
• Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing required.

Qualifications

• Valid New York State Registered Nurse license and current registration, issued by the New York State Education Department.
• Current AHA BLS certification required.
• ONS Fundamentals of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Administration preferred.
• May reasonably anticipate contact with human blood and other potentially infectious materials; must exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment, and follow infection control policies.
