Registered Nurse

About the Role

The Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care in an assigned clinic or clinical area, including ambulatory, psychiatric, medical/surgical, critical care, specialty units, or long-term care units within Bon Secours Charity Health System.

They deliver direct nursing care by assessing patients' needs, performing physical examinations, and collecting health history and demographic information. The role involves planning, developing, implementing, administering, and evaluating specialized treatment and preventive care regimens in line with medical orders and nursing standards. Responsibilities also include annotating medical records, implementing infection control protocols, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct nursing care to patients by assessing their physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual status.
• Develops a plan of care consistent with the patient's condition and annotates medical records in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements. Provides information to clinical and support staff to facilitate proper nursing care. Includes patients and family in care planning.
• Performs comprehensive patient assessments, noting any improvement or deterioration in the patient's condition, and implements and evaluates nursing care accordingly.
• Assesses patients and administers treatments, medications, and general care according to the nursing plan of care, best practices, established protocols, and medical orders to treat actual or potential disorders and optimize well-being.
• Operates specialized medical equipment.
• Evaluates and documents patients' responses to care regimens, modifies or resolves interventions on the nursing plan of care, and collaborates with physicians to revise treatment plans as needed.
• Collaborates with appropriate members of the health team (e.g., LPNs, Nurse's Aides, Attendants) to coordinate patient care.
• Coordinates care with other departments (e.g., dietary, social services, rehab services) as a liaison to ensure timely service delivery.
• Provides education to patients and families about medications, medical treatments, disease-specific information, and follow-up care.
• Resolves conflicts and participates in discharge planning in collaboration with other healthcare providers and community resources to ensure support services address patient needs.
• Participates in Quality Assurance activities to ensure the provision of optimum care and follow-up for patients.
• Ensures continuity of nursing care by communicating a comprehensive handoff during transitions (e.g., shift changes, assignment changes, patient transfers).
• Participates in a multi-disciplinary approach to nursing care with other professional team members.
• Advocates for patient rights and ensures continuity and understanding of care given.
• Participates in continuing education programs and in-service training to provide appropriate nursing care.
• Completes continuing education programs on time and complies with hospital policies and procedures.
• Actively participates in the performance improvement process, including data collection, analysis, and implementation of changes.
• Precepts and mentors newer staff on the assigned unit and may act as a preceptor to new graduate nurses.
• Attends staff meetings and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Previous professional nursing experience preferred.
• Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing required; a bachelor’s or master's degree in nursing preferred.
• Must possess a limited permit to practice nursing, issued by the New York State Education Department, or a valid license and current registration as a Registered Nurse.
• Current AHA BLS and ACLS certifications required.

If applicable, the individual may reasonably anticipate contact with human blood and other potentially infectious materials. Universal precautions, personal protective equipment, and infection control policies are required.
