About the role
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides high-quality clinical care, triage, and health education to students within the Student Health Service (SHS) office. This role is responsible for the initial assessment of patients, performing laboratory procedures, and administering nursing treatments under the direction of clinical leadership. The RN maintains a professional environment, ensures strict patient confidentiality, and contributes to the overall efficiency of health clinic operations.
Responsibilities
- Perform continuous triage and medical evaluation for students via telephone and in-person walk-ins.
- Conduct detailed intake interviews to document nature, duration, onset, and severity of symptoms, including current medications and allergies.
- Facilitate patient work-ups by obtaining vital signs and completing nursing procedures prior to clinician evaluation.
- Identify and escalate urgent medical conditions to clinicians for immediate intervention.
- Administer nursing treatments and services as directed by the Medical Director and staff clinicians.
- Provide reproductive health services, including pregnancy testing, consultation, and emergency contraception.
- Oversee the cold table self-care station, ensuring medications are stocked, packaged, and labeled according to protocol.
- Manage daily laboratory maintenance by ensuring a clean and organized workspace, monitoring refrigerator temperatures, and operating the autoclave to sterilize instruments as required.
- Perform diagnostic procedures, such as rapid strep testing, urinalysis dipsticks, blood draws, urine pregnancy tests, and COVID/Flu testing, in strict accordance with Student Health Service policies.
- Execute required quality control tests to ensure the accuracy and integrity of laboratory results.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all patient interactions within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Always uphold HIPAA standards and strict patient confidentiality.
- Participate in Quality Assurance (QA) activities to improve clinical outcomes and department efficiency.
Requirements
- Open Competitive: possession of a license and current registration as a registered professional nurse in New York State.
- Must be certified in CPR and recertified every two years.
- Experience in a college health care service setting.
- Experience in primary care, urgent care or outpatient office setting.
- Experience working with an adolescent/young adult population.
- Experience working with an electronic medical record system.
- Understanding of HIPAA (patient privacy), FERPA (student records), and OSHA standards for laboratory safety.
- Skilled in identifying medical emergencies and responding with appropriate life-saving measures (CPR).
