Registered Nurse

NaphCare is hiring a Registered Nurse (RN) to join our team of medical professionals in Decatur, AL, where we manage all aspects of healthcare for individuals who are currently incarcerated in the North Alabama Community Work Center.

About the role

As a Correctional Registered Nurse (RN), you will work alongside correctional officers and other medical professionals to provide care to individuals in residence. This position operates within a controlled environment where security is a top priority. You will perform a variety of duties, including physical assessments, medication administration, chronic illness management, and emergency response. This is a unique opportunity to make a difference for a diverse population of patients with complex medical needs. New graduates are encouraged to apply—we provide training in correctional healthcare.

Responsibilities

• Perform initial health screenings and physical assessments of newly detained individuals.
• Monitor and document patient health, including vital signs and medical histories.
• Provide direct patient care, triage, assess patient needs, develop care plans, and coordinate services.
• Manage acute and chronic conditions such as asthma, hypertension, and diabetes.
• Respond to medical emergencies, provide first aid, and ensure timely transport to appropriate healthcare facilities.
• Educate patients on preventative care, healthy lifestyle choices, and substance abuse prevention.
• Adhere to correctional facility security protocols while collaborating with correctional officers and healthcare professionals to ensure patient safety and well-being.
• Maintain accurate medical records, document treatment plans, and report relevant information.

Requirements

• Current, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse in the state of Alabama.
• Active BLS CPR Certification (AHA preferred).
• Knowledge of nursing practice principles, occupational health and safety standards, infectious disease management, and applicable healthcare laws and regulations.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Flexible schedule with availability to work overtime as needed.
• Ability to interact effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds, including those with mental health or substance abuse issues.
• Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, professional integrity, and adherence to facility policies and legal requirements.
• Must pass a criminal background check and drug screening.

Physical Capabilities

• Ability to stand for long periods, lift and move patients (up to 50 pounds), bend, squat, reach, push, pull, and walk significant distances.
• Capable of performing physically demanding tasks such as CPR while maintaining balance and endurance throughout a shift.
