Registered Nurse - Ambulatory (OB/GYN)

About the Role

Performs an age-specific plan of care for a designated group of patients using the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. Collaborates with physicians and other health team members in coordinating and implementing procedures and treatments. Uses leadership skills and clinical judgment in coordinating patient care and directing/delegating activities of the patient care unit team.

Responsibilities

• Conducts patient interviews, explains policies and procedures, and reviews patient charts to answer questions and assess health status, including gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, neurological, mobility, sensory deficits, prostheses use, skin condition, pain level, and psychosocial health.
• Adjusts and communicates the plan of care based on assessments, documenting patient’s physiologic and psychological health status.
• Identifies cultural and ethnic requirements to reduce anxiety and ensure patient satisfaction.
• Develops patient outcome statements, establishes individualized goals, and identifies care activities and priorities to achieve expected outcomes.
• Coordinates cost-effective use of supplies, equipment, and medication, and collaborates with physicians and health team members to implement the plan of care.
• Implements the plan of care, ensuring safety precautions, reassessing patients as needed, administering treatments, and providing emotional support to patients and significant others.
• Makes accurate observations of patient conditions, reports and records them, and maintains accurate documentation of treatments, activities, and responses.
• Acts rapidly and effectively during emergencies, manages self and others, and provides a calm environment.
• Participates in discharge planning, coordinates referrals, and provides discharge instructions.
• Evaluates care provided, documents effectiveness, and performs variance analysis for performance improvement.
• Designs, implements, and evaluates systems to improve care in the unit.
• Collaborates with care team members in planning and carrying out treatment regimens, providing direction as needed.
• Accurately interprets and implements treatment regimens as prescribed by physicians, assists during treatments and procedures, and communicates changes in patient condition.
• Performs decubitus care (grade I-IV), preventive skin care, dressing applications, warm and cold compresses, irrigations, and other skin care procedures.
• Administers medications safely, educates patients and families on drug and food interactions, and documents medication administration correctly.
• Participates in patient and family education, explains conditions, records and communicates assessment data, and evaluates teaching effectiveness.

Requirements

• Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred. Must be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and obtain a BSN Degree within five years of job entry date.
• Current License to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
• Previous Labor And Delivery/Antepartum experience highly preferred.
