Responsibilities

As a Registered Nurse at Garnet Health Medical Center, you will uphold the standards of professional nursing as defined by the American Nurses Association (ANA), including:

  • Providing a caring relationship that facilitates health and healing.
  • Addressing the range of human experiences and responses to health and illness within physical and social environments.
  • Integrating assessment data with patient insights to guide care.
  • Applying scientific knowledge, judgment, and critical thinking to diagnosis and treatment.
  • Advancing professional nursing knowledge through scholarly inquiry.
  • Influencing social and public policy to improve healthcare systems.
  • Ensuring safe, quality, and evidence-based practice.

Clinical nurses are guided by the New York State Nurse Practice Act, ANA’s Code of Ethics, Jean Watson’s Nursing Philosophy and Science of Caring, and Garnet Health’s Nursing Strategic Plan. You will contribute to an improved healthcare system by delivering safe, timely, effective, equitable, and patient-centered care.

Qualifications

  • Licensure: Active New York State Nursing License in good standing.
  • Education: Associate, Baccalaureate (preferred), Master’s, or Doctorate Degree in Nursing from an accredited school.
  • Certification: American Nurses Association-endorsed certifications or Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses Certification preferred (based on specialty hours of work requirement).

Physical Demands

  • Considerable standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Significant visual demands.
  • New hires must meet RN essential physical functioning requirements as determined by Employee Health/Pre-Screening Assessment.
  • During patient transferring tasks, if lifting more than 35 lbs of a patient’s weight, assistive devices must be used (per Waters, T. [2007] ergonomic guidelines).
  • Must participate in Safe Patient Handling Initiatives.
  • Ability to perform essential position responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation (per ADA requirements).

Mental Demands

  • Ability to foster collaborative relationships and work well under pressure.
  • Strong organizational, critical thinking, and analytical skills with flexibility to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Capacity to multi-task and maintain detailed attention in an environment with uncontrolled interruptions.
  • Sensitivity to customer needs and expectations.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends.

Working Conditions

  • Contact with patients under diverse circumstances (per OSHA Directive CPL-03-00-016).
  • Exposure to unpleasant patient elements (e.g., blood and other potentially infectious materials).
  • Subject to varying and unpredictable situations, including emergencies and crises.
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety glasses, respirators, or full-body suits.
  • Potential contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards.
  • Adherence to New York Department of Labor/Nursing Licensure Board recommendation on the 16-hour work limit.

Patient and Staff Safety

  • Recognize and prioritize patient/staff safety precautions in daily operations.
  • Consistently utilize safety protocols and report potentially dangerous situations.
  • Take immediate action to minimize injury risks where applicable.
  • Report errors via the MIDAS RDE system and participate in Root Cause Analysis to reduce risks.

Training

  • Accountable for completing annual/required mandatory training within specified timeframes.
  • Must maintain current BLS certification; additional AHA training may be required for certain clinical areas.
  • Department-Specific Training:
    • ACLS required within 1 year post-probationary period for Medical-Surgical units.
    • 5 North: Peritoneal Dialysis Training required within 6 months of hire/transfer.

Experience

  • Preferred: 1 year of Medical-Surgical experience.
  • Considered: New graduates.

Pay

The compensation range for this role is $56.58–$62.48 hourly. The range complies with New York State law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements and does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differentials, or other forms of compensation. Final compensation is determined based on factors such as location, specialty, service line, relevant experience, education, credentials, budget, and internal equity.
