About the role
This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). Titles under this program may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, meaning no exam is required, but you must meet the minimum qualifications. Employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to convert to permanent competitive status within one year of appointment.
Responsibilities
- Conduct nursing assessments; obtain, record, and update individuals’ health information and vital signs using standard instruments and procedures.
- Prepare, implement, and modify nursing care plans; assist with examinations and treatments; administer medications and nursing procedures as prescribed.
- Observe, monitor, and record individuals’ symptoms, conditions, diet, physical activity, and responses to medication or health status changes; report findings.
- Serve as the nursing representative on treatment teams; provide information on nursing needs; consult and coordinate with healthcare disciplines to assess, plan, implement, or evaluate care.
- Make clinical rounds to assess nursing care needs and observe/participate in the provision of nursing services.
- Provide health teaching, counseling, and education to individuals, families, and groups; develop health improvement programs.
- Implement infection control protocols and provide related consultation and instruction to staff.
- Maintain and update charts, records, and documentation in compliance with agency, state, and federal requirements; collect data to support medical research.
- Monitor inventories and ensure standards for medications, supplies, and equipment are maintained.
- Provide clinical supervision and instruction to Graduate Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff.
- Delegate appropriate nursing activities, skills, or procedures to staff; evaluate the provision of nursing services.
- Act as liaison to outside agencies and providers to ensure continuity of care; advocate for individuals’ needs; provide instruction on discharge plans.
- Perform supervisory duties over Graduate Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff; prepare reports and performance evaluations.
Requirements
- Must have a license and current registration as a registered professional nurse in New York State.
All OPWDD employees must be eligible and maintain eligibility for full and unconditional participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Continued employment depends on maintaining this eligibility.

Pay
Starting salary includes the statutory hiring rate for PS&T Grade 18 ($66,951), an increased hiring salary ($9,196), and a geographic pay differential ($20,000), totaling $96,147. The job rate is $85,138, with the geographic differential added.
