Registered Land Surveyor (Exempt)

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

• Determines methods and procedures for establishing or reestablishing survey control and the accuracy of all surveys performed for the Authority.
• Coincides findings with work of engineering personnel, clients, and others concerned with project.
• Prepares and maintains accurate notes, sketches, maps, reports, and legal descriptions of surveys in order to describe, certify the survey work.
• Verifies the accuracy of survey data, including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites, and assumes legal responsibility for the survey work and is in the ownership of the Authority and within the laws and regulations of the Navajo Nation.
• Directs or conducts surveys in order to establish legal boundaries for properties, based on legal deeds, grant of easement, and/or and withdrawals.
• Records the results of surveys, including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land features.
• Calculates heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain.
• Prepares or supervises preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys.
• Writes descriptions of property boundary surveys for use in deeds, leases, or other legal documents.
• Plans and conducts ground surveys designed to establish baselines, elevations, and other geodetic measurements.
• Searched legal records, survey records, and land withdrawals to obtain information about property boundaries in areas to be surveyed.
• Adjusts surveying instruments in order to maintain their accuracy.
• Establishes fixed points for use in making maps, using geodetic and engineering instruments.
• Determines longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas, using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS).
• Trains personnel and directs their work in such activities as performing surveys or drafting maps.
• Analyzes survey objectives and specifications in order to prepare survey proposals or to direct others in survey proposal preparation.
• Computes geodetic measurements and interprets survey data in order to determine positions, shapes, and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features.
• Develops criteria for survey methods and procedures.
• Develops criteria for the design and modification of survey instruments.
• Conducts research in surveying and mapping methods.
• May use aerial surveys of specified geographical areas, if available.
• Determines specifications for photographic equipment to be used for aerial photography, as well as altitudes from which to photograph terrain, if required.
• Directs one or multiple survey crews to accomplish assigned work.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

• A High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
• Vocational/Specialized Training.
• Land Surveyor License required in Arizona, New Mexico, and/or Utah. CFEDS License preferred.
• 5 years of experience in Surveying/Legal Surveying.
• Experience in the interpretation of design and construction manuals and standards; ability to recognize features in the field.
• Valid Driver's License (subject to motor vehicle record review).
