Responsibilities

  • Evidenced Based Clinical Practice: Assess the nutritional status of inpatients and outpatients at high risk.
  • Develop, document, and implement nutritional plans based on assessments.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team rounds to promote nutritional care.
  • Serve as a community resource, especially for home care and pediatricians.

Education/Life Long Learning

  • Provide education and counseling to caregivers, pediatric patients, and their families.
  • Provide education to MDs, RNs, and other disciplines as needed.
  • Round with physicians to offer advice, monitor patient status, and adjust therapy as necessary.
  • Guide and instruct diet technicians and nutrition assistants.
  • Mentor and train new staff and dietetic interns.

Process Improvement

  • Participate in all department QI activities and maintain monthly stats and reports.
  • Complete interdisciplinary chart audits and peer reviews.
  • Identify and communicate clinical safety issues and department business or efficiency issues to appropriate stakeholders.

Clinical Leadership and Expertise

  • Develop and implement practice protocols for continuous quality improvement in nutritional therapy.
  • Participate in hospital research as requested.
  • Stay updated on nutrition research and educate staff and students on relevant issues; act as a preceptor for students in nutrition.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of age-related differences and needs in specific patient populations.
  • Show cultural sensitivity in interactions with patients and families.
  • Support the organization's mission, values, and goals through consistent behavior.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor or Master’s of Science in Nutrition or completion of a Didactic Program in Dietetics leading to registration eligibility.
  • Experience: Two to five years of pediatric experience preferred.
  • Licenses and Certifications: American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider required within six months of hire; Registered Dietitian (R.D.) with CDR required within six months of hire; CT State Certification (CD-N) required on hire, except for new graduates who need to obtain it within six months of hire.
