About the role
The South Dakota Department of Health's programs and services aim to prevent illness and injury, promote healthy living, educate the public, and ensure access to quality healthcare. This position supports the WIC Supplemental Nutrition Program, focusing on nutrition services that impact family and community health.
Responsibilities
- Supports the WIC Supplemental Nutrition Program statewide.
- Manages the WIC Assist process for statewide coverage.
- Determines participant eligibility, including identity, income, residency, and nutritional risk.
- Conducts nutrition and health assessments.
- Provides nutrition support and education.
- Offers breastfeeding support and education.
- Links participants to appropriate health and social resources.
- Offers nutrition-related technical assistance to team members.
- Delivers nutrition education in community settings.
- Collaborates on setting nutrition, breastfeeding, and outreach goals for the population served.
- Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with community partners and providers.
- May extend work hours and travel to satellite sites.
- May provide virtual services from a state office location.
Requirements
- Licensed as a Nutritionist in South Dakota or eligible for licensure within one year of employment.
- Master's degree in human nutrition, public health nutrition, clinical nutrition, nutrition education, community education, or foods and nutrition.
- Dietetic internship or similar Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics approval.
- Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) or obtain registration within 365 days of hire.
- Motivational interviewing skills.
- Knowledge of food and nutrition sciences, lactation sciences, and infant and child developmental milestones.
- Effective communication and referral skills.
- Ability to work independently and in teams, with cultural competency.
- Ability to lift and perform anthropometric measurements.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in human nutrition, public health nutrition, clinical nutrition, nutrition education, community education, or foods and nutrition.
- Dietetic internship or similar Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics approval.
- Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
- Licensed as a Nutritionist in South Dakota or eligible for licensure within one year of employment.
- Knowledge of food and nutrition sciences, lactation sciences, and infant and child developmental milestones.
- Effective communication and referral skills.
- Ability to work independently and in teams, with cultural competency.
- Ability to lift and perform anthropometric measurements.
