Regional Reporter

About the role

The regional team delivers content to the newspaper group that is relevant to Western Slope markets while taking a broader, statewide and regional lens to supplement hyper-local coverage. This elite team covers high-interest beats through enterprise reporting, spot news, series, investigations, and discussion pieces, producing quality stories, photographs, videos, and audio for websites, print newspapers, social media, magazines, and special sections. The role focuses on researching, documenting, writing, and presenting news in an honest, ethical, accurate, and unbiased way, with a strong emphasis on Western Slope communities.

Regional reporters will attend state department meetings, press conferences, shareholder calls, and other public events to inform readers about key issues. Collaboration with properties across the Western Slope and building relationships with state department heads, communication directors, and public officials are central to this role.

Responsibilities

• Research, conduct interviews, and fact-check details to write 4-6 stories per week.
• Ensure stories are written in an honest, ethical, accurate, and unbiased way.
• Execute the regional editor’s vision and content plan.
• Generate story ideas based on conversations with key sources, reviewing agendas, trends, and documents while considering reader interest data.
• File and request public documents and records.
• Collaborate with internal and external partners, including newsrooms and journalists from within and outside the company.
• Adhere to the regional reporting team workflow and meet all deadlines.
• Attend staff meetings, update shared budgets, and communicate effectively with editors.
• Edit and upload content in the content management system, with attention to hyperlinks, photos, multimedia, and fact boxes.
• Cover news with a digital-first mindset, prioritizing quick online publication.
• Develop and cultivate relationships with key sources.
• Assist other properties with reporting as needed.
• Mentor reporters at other properties.
• Travel to various properties to build relationships with teams and communities, and cover key news stories as necessary.

Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of experience at a daily newspaper.
• College degree and/or 10 years of on-the-job reporting experience.
• Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
