About the role
Under minimal supervision, work independently performing advanced refrigeration maintenance and repair throughout the warehouse. Provide maintenance support as necessary to ensure operational objectives are met. Areas of knowledge include mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, PLC, fabrication and welding, ammonia, and plumbing. Direct and oversee the work of contractors on occasion.
Responsibilities
- Define and set up ideal operational settings and parameters for all refrigeration equipment (e.g., superheat, regulators, pressure settings, defrost cycles).
- Proactively monitor system performance and take appropriate actions to ensure optimal operation.
- Pump out/evacuate refrigerant as necessary for component-level replacement and/or repair.
- Provide in-depth troubleshooting of refrigeration, electrical, mechanical, and controls systems to root cause and recommend corrective action.
- Perform calibrations (slide valve, potentiometers, RTDs, pressure transducers, etc.).
- Replace components within the refrigeration system using safe LOTO procedures and in accordance with the PSM program.
- Perform both routine and complex maintenance and repairs on various types of warehouse equipment in accordance with OSHA Standards.
- Participate in Maintenance/Refrigeration/Energy Excellence implementation and sustainment of Americold Operating System (AOS).
- Share knowledge and assist in the training and development of less experienced technicians.
- Inspect and review “in-progress” and “completed” work of internal and external technicians for compliance and quality control.
- Conduct tests of safety equipment to ensure OHSA and operational standards.
- Maintain accurate preventive and predictive maintenance records within the CMMS System.
- Keep work area and tools 6S’d (well maintained, clean, organized) and perform housekeeping duties as required.
- Work flexible shifts, if required, including on-call.
- Perform related work and other job assignments as required.
Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- 5+ years of industrial refrigeration maintenance experience, including ammonia refrigeration.
- Required to successfully complete assigned Industrial Refrigeration and Mechanical-Electrical courses.
- Troubleshooting and repairs experience with differing control systems such as ALTA/Allen Bradley.
- Required to be trained in HAZMAT and obtain and maintain the certification.
- Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) experience.
Qualifications
- Experience working in a cold storage environment.
- RETA CIRO/CARO certifications.
- Experience using Oracle Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Ability to perform advanced troubleshooting and diagnose down to the component level on all refrigeration equipment.
- Experience training and developing less experienced technicians.
Physical Requirements
- Able to tolerate working environment with inside controlled temperatures of minus 45 (-45) degrees Fahrenheit (-43 degrees Celsius) and outside ambient temperatures (including heat, cold, and precipitation).
- Able to work at heights in excess of 30 ft. (9 meters) and access elevated platforms, catwalks, and roofs.
- Able to work in confined areas.
- Able to climb ladders and stairs.
- Able to frequently stand, walk, push, pull, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and/or crouch.
- Able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (23 kg) frequently.
- Able to operate hand and power tools safely.
- Able to meet specific vision abilities required by this job including close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception (use of contacts are prohibited when working with ammonia).
- Able to pass a physical and respiratory/respirator fit exam, depending on the specific role.
- Able to frequently step up/on or step down/off to mount and dismount material handling equipment.
- Able to perform fine articulation movements with fingers/hands and/or feet to operate equipment.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment required for any/all tasks.
