Refrigeration Technician

About the Role

Maintain the infrastructure and utility systems within the facility. This role involves handling all utilities and infrastructure maintenance issues, promoting high-level internal customer service, and collaborating closely with all site departments and functional management.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in and support the Risk Management Process (RMP), assisting in the development of system and operational standards and corrective actions.
  • Serve as a shift technician for utilities and infrastructure maintenance.
  • Maintain preventive maintenance (PM) completion.
  • Work with outside contractors on facilities and utilities projects, including repairs, modifications, and installations.
  • Follow up with skilled staff and contract labor to ensure scheduled work is completed according to established timelines.
  • Provide proactive communication and viable solutions to site departments and management regarding problems and complications.
  • Assist with facility landscaping requirements and snow removal.
  • Maintain compliance with company policies, safety standards, and good housekeeping practices.
  • Work within the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) program and compliance guidelines.
  • Evaluate and discuss changes with the Facility Utilities Supervisor and implement changes as needed.
  • Oversee safety processes, including goal setting, hazard recognition and elimination, safety procedure administration, area inspections, job skills and compliance training, accident investigation, and safety meetings.
  • Interpret and enforce company policies and safety regulations.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Two-year degree or certificate from a college or technical school, or at least 5-7 years of combined education and experience in dedicated industrial Utilities Maintenance, Ammonia Refrigeration, Boilers, Waste Water, and Air Compressors principles in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ammonia Operator/HAZWOPER certification highly desirable.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including days, afternoons, midnights, overtime, and weekends as necessary.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Electrical power distribution.
  • Ammonia Refrigeration experience highly desirable; HC HVAC at a minimum.
  • Compressed air systems.
  • Boilers, de-aeration, and steam treatment.
  • Waste water treatment.
  • HVAC, including air filtration.
  • Building infrastructure, piping, and drains.
  • Ability to manage and organize multiple tasks and projects.
  • Ability to react positively to changes in priorities.
  • Computer literacy, with the ability to learn new software programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the technical details of utility systems.
  • Ability to develop technical solutions to problems and system failures.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with site department leaders and management about utility problems and complications.
  • Self-starter with the ability to plan and accomplish work with minimal supervision.
  • Highly resilient to varying workloads and service requests.
  • Highly motivated to find solutions that improve utilities and facilities.
  • Reliability, strong work ethic, quality work performance, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment.

Physical & Mental Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
  • Ability to use hands/arms to reach, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Ability to work in all areas of the facility, including hot and cold areas, and be exposed to wet and humid conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs or more.
  • Excellent vision, including distant and peripheral, with the ability to identify and distinguish colors and adjust focus.
  • Ability to work in high-noise environments requiring ear protection.
  • May work near moving mechanical parts, in high and/or confining places, and in outside weather conditions.
