Recycling Operations NF Supervisor
About the role
The Recycling Operations NF Supervisor reports to the Recycling Operations NF Manager or the Recycling Operations Facility Manager I or II. This role ensures compliance with the company’s Health, Safety, and Environmental regulations while optimizing nonferrous receiving activities for efficiency, processing operations, product shipping, and profit maximization. The supervisor coordinates nonferrous processing activities with staff, commercial operations, peers, and subordinates, focusing on inventory management, personnel and equipment utilization, and shipping activities.
The position requires proactive enforcement of process and quality standards to ensure nonferrous materials meet or exceed consumer specifications. The primary goal is achieving excellence in all facets of nonferrous processing operations, enhancing safety, efficiency, and profitability.
Responsibilities
- Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S):
- Ensures safe work practices and equipment use, adhering to company safety policies, OSHA, and regulatory guidelines.
- Creates H&S Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with Regional Safety Engineer(s).
- Ensures timely safety and operational training for department employees, maintaining signed acknowledgement forms and training files.
- Assigns an employee to the Safety Committee and attends Safety Committee meetings on rotation.
- Monitors and improves the safety program to reduce accident frequency, implementing new safety procedures and goals.
- Operational Performance & Best Management Practices:
- Directs, evaluates, schedules, and coordinates equipment and personnel for daily nonferrous operations, including processing and loading.
- Creates and maintains a layout plan for NF processing and shipping spaces to optimize workflow.
- Submits and implements approved process improvements to enhance refining quality, profitability, and safety.
- Collaborates with the MRB NF Operations Committee to review and implement best practices.
- Equipment & Maintenance:
- Inspects department equipment to ensure operational compliance and submits work orders as needed.
- Submits purchase orders to maintain or enhance department operations.
- Inventory & Quality Control:
- Evaluates incoming nonferrous material for quantity and quality adherence.
- Meets contractual quantity and quality obligations.
- Prepares Time & Weight Analysis reports for customer material and documents processing times.
- Validates scale tickets for accuracy against purchased material.
- Trains production personnel on testing equipment and maintains positive inventory control, especially for Work in Process (WIP) material.
- Monitors and organizes storage containers, ensuring proper marking of tare weights and bin dates.
- Coordinates material pricing, provides quotes, and oversees grading, processing, sales, and shipment of nonferrous products.
- Aids in scheduling the truck fleet, monitors truck movements, and prepares manifests for outgoing material.
- Ensures off-grade or off-spec materials are reported and addressed before shipment to avoid quality complaints or claims.
- Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Maintains accurate inventory records and conducts monthly physical inventory audits with the Financial Business Partner.
- Partners with commercial operations to develop sales strategies that reduce inventory carrying costs.
- Develops strategic buying programs supporting production, yard capacity, and logistics.
- Administrative Management:
- Monitors staffing levels to ensure cost-effectiveness and competitiveness.
- Ensures compliance with HR policies and union contracts for supervisory practices.
- Reviews performance of direct reports and interviews prospective employees.
- Works with Human Resources to prepare job descriptions.
- Internal Control Responsibilities:
- Supports the company’s internal control process, including compliance and suggesting improvements to policies and procedures.
- Communicates operational problems, policy violations, or illegal actions to management.
- Supervisory Responsibility:
Directly supervises employees within the NF Processing Department.
- Job Conditions:
- Exposure to physical operations in metal recycling yards, including walking/climbing on uneven surfaces and occasional inclement weather.
- Work pressure may be substantial during peak times, with irregular schedules and workflow disturbances.
- Occasional travel to meet customers or visit other company locations.
- Physical Activities Required:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 70 pounds occasionally.
- Continuous communication via speech and hearing (phone, email, in-person).
- Visual acuity for detail work, data analysis, and computer use.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- High School-level mathematical skills.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in the metal recycling industry.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive an automobile.
- Thorough knowledge of nonferrous materials grading.
- Strong judgment, interpersonal communication, and organizational skills.
- Self-starter with the ability to negotiate; supervisory experience is a plus.
