Job Summary

Recreation Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively and frequently with program participants, parents, volunteers, coaches, and contractors
  • Have strong time management skills and prepare programs a season in advance
  • Plan, promote, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate current youth recreational sports programs
  • Manage multiple programs at multiple locations simultaneously
  • Manage independent contract positions such as instructors, officials, vendors, referees, etc.
  • Participate in job-related committees, sub-committees, and professional development activities
  • Collect program fees and monitor program expenditures
  • Purchase program supplies, uniforms, trophies, prizes and equipment and maintain and control inventory
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Use computer software including spreadsheets, word documents, and specific recreation software
  • Use advertising and marketing practices to promote programming and activities
  • Solicit physical and financial support and engagement from volunteers, local organizations, and sponsors

Recreation Supervisor Responsibilities

  • All of the responsibilities listed above
  • Collaborate with Director to complete post-program evaluations
  • Manage the Concession program
  • Identify the needs of the community and feasibility of expanding programming
  • Aid in preparing and administering individual program budgets

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong and effective oral and written communication skills
  • Strong planning, organization, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Management and supervisory techniques including hiring, training, mentoring, leading, supervising, and evaluating work
  • Understanding of budgeting and accounting procedures
  • Ability to assess and implement effective, diverse, and creative recreational programming
  • Ability to analyze community needs, problem-solve, and implement solutions, and relate to the needs of all age groups
  • Ability to establish good working relationships with the public, subordinates, and supervisors
  • Ability to maintain self-control and composure and set a professional example for the staff and participants
  • Computer skills including spreadsheets, word documents, social media, and sports management software

Qualifications

  • Preferred Bachelor's degree in parks and recreation, youth development, sports management, or a related field
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) Certification or the ability to achieve certification within the first year of employment
  • Required High school diploma or GED
  • CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain certification within 60 days of employment
  • Possess a valid drivers' license
  • Be able to meet physical requirements with reasonable accommodations

Physical Demands

This work is performed in an office, recreational facility, and field environment where the employee may be exposed to hot/cold inclement weather, dust, dirt, and noise. Some work may necessitate the use of protective devices. Work is often performed while sitting at a desk but may include long hours of standing with limited breaks, walking, stooping, and occasionally lifting and/or moving supplies and materials up to 50 pounds related to recreation programs, activities, and events. Work may often include the preparation and cleaning of park fields and facilities prior to and after use by the public.

Work Environment

Occasionally exposed to a variety of outdoor weather conditions including extreme heat and extreme cold, direct sunlight, rain, snow, fumes, dust and other airborne particles. Will also come into contact with cleaning solutions and fumes associated with those. Work requires a high level of public interaction and is often performed around crowds and/or a large number of youth present and in close physical contact with the public. Working conditions are typically moderately quiet, but will also encounter loud noises, music, cheering, recreation events which may cause the noise level at times to be excessive.

Hours and Days of Work

Hours and days of work vary. May be required to work evenings and weekends. May be required to answer City provided cell phones during irregular hours.

Benefits

This is a full-time, non-exempt position, salary range is $40,622 - $58,488/yr. The City offers very competitive health, dental, and vision insurance, LAGERS pension, employer-paid short-term disability/life insurance, and paid time off.
