Recreation Coordinator

About the role
The Recreation Coordinator is a member of the Recreation and Community Services Department. The position is responsible for the planning and coordination of any of the following areas: aquatics, youth and adult sports programs, seniors, park activities, classes, camps, facilities, youth and teen programming, special events, and/or assisting in the formulation of a variety of leisure and senior and social services programs. This position is a full-time position working 40 hours per week with a varied schedule including evenings, weekends and selected holidays for City events or programs.
Responsibilities
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Facilitate registration for programs, activities and classes
- Cookordinate special event logistics
- Assist in the preparation of the Recreation Division budget
- Provide excellent customer service
- Handle selection of volunteer and seasonal personnel
- Assist in the supervision, training, and evaluation of personnel
- Prepare reports, news releases, and marketing materials, including social media outreach
- Monitor facility maintenance and implement safety standards for programs and personnel
- Perform other duties and assignments as directed by the Recreation Managers or Recreation Supervisors
Requirements
- Essential Functions
- Experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible municipal recreation experience; or any combination of training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, ability, and skill needed for the position
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in recreation, public policy or administration, or a related field or a combination of work experience
- Required to obtain a First Aid/CPR/AED certification within three months of employment
- Knowledge: Recreational activities, events, and facilities
- Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Research, analysis, and making sound recommendations; communication skills; ability to work with the public; customer service; follow written and oral directions; establish and maintain positive working relationships; first aid, health and safety practices for recreation programs and facilities; organize and coordinate special events; supervision of municipal recreation programs; follow written and oral directions, while exercising initiative and independence; establish and maintain positive working relationships with other City employees and community groups
Qualifications
- Desirable Experience and Training: Experience in planning, coordinating, and implementing special events
- Contract Classes and/or Programming for Preschool Age Children: Experience in programming for preschool age children
Skills
Knowledge of recreational activities, events, and facilities. Ability to research, analyze, and make sound recommendations. Communicate clearly and concisely, prepare personnel, program and facility schedules. Work effectively with the public, including, but not limited to marketing recreation programs and classes. Demonstrate effective customer service while promoting the organizational values of the City. Typical word processing, customized computer software and social media applications. First aid, health and safety practices for recreation programs and facilities. Organize and coordinate special events. Supervision of municipal recreation programs. Follow written and oral directions, while exercising initiative and independence. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with other City employees and community groups.

- Retirement: CA Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) Classic Members (2.7% at 55) retirement formula. PEPRA Members (2% @ 62) retirement formula.
- Medical Plan Allowance: City contributions per month towards (Medical, Dental, & Vision) insurance. Per Resolution No. 2024-32. Employee Only: $1,319 per month. Employee + 1: $1,850 per month. Family: $1,950 per month. If you have proof of comparable insurance coverage, you can waive your medical insurance with the City and receive $700 per month in cash.
- Life Insurance and Long-Term Disability: Paid by the City. After (60) days on payroll the City will pay for $50,000 Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance for the employee. After (60) days on payroll the City will pay for long-term disability coverage based on 2/3 of the monthly payroll of $3,000 the maximum amount paid would be $2,000 per month. Although the City does not participate in Social Security, employees must participate in Medicare.
- Paid Time Off (PTO): Vacation – Eighty (80) hours of vacation a year for the first two years of employment. It increases by (8) hours each year starting at year 3. It tops out at (176) hours per year after fourteen (14) years of service. (Not eligible to take vacation time for the first six (6) months of employment). Sick Leave – Ninety-Six (96) hours of sick leave each year. Holidays - Eleven (11) paid holidays per year. Floating Holidays – Accrue twenty (20) hours of floating holiday pay each year every January 1st – Use It or Lose It and it is prorated the first year of employment.
Pay
Salary range: $60,000 - $80,000 annually
Schedule
Varying schedule including evenings, weekends and selected holidays for City events or programs
