Recreation Assistant (Lead Lifeguard)

This position is located at Aquatics, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department, Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, FL. The purpose of this role is to provide lifeguard duties in a variety of situations and safeguard the lives of persons at the assigned work area throughout the MWR Department. Tasks may also include supporting MWR community events.

Responsibilities

• Leads and coordinates the daily operations of the pools under the direction and supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor, including managing approximately 20 Lifeguards.
• Advises lifeguards on necessary safety precautions and explains work requirements, methods, and procedures for cleaning the pool, pool areas, and locker rooms.
• Closes swimming areas and informs the Aquatics Supervisor when unsafe environmental or health conditions exist until safe conditions return.
• Recommends equipment and supplies necessary for daily maintenance of related areas and keeps the supervisor informed about assigned activities.
• May provide swimming lessons to patrons.
• Assists with administrative duties, including scheduling, arranging parties, and ensuring adequate personnel coverage.
• Reports maintenance problems to the proper parties or supervisor and keeps equipment and supplies organized.
• Conducts training for lifeguards under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor.
• Assists in recording attendance, equipment inventories, accidents, incidents, pool parties, and other related information.
• Assists in the evaluation of swimming pool services and consults with the supervisor.
• Performs rescue work, renders first aid, and prepares complete accident reports when necessary.
• Enforces swimming pool rules and regulations, assists swimmers in distress, and alerts supervisors of unusual circumstances.
• Performs housekeeping tasks to maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and appearance of pool and related facilities (e.g., vacuuming pool, cleaning deck).
• Inspects pool and surrounding area to ensure cleanliness and safety at all times.
• Checks chlorine and pH levels on a scheduled basis and communicates any issues to the aquatics manager.
• Determines patron eligibility and provides quality customer service, including answering questions and providing program information.
• May assist with scheduled pool parties after hours or base-wide special events.
• Maintains daily logs and records.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successfully complete a background investigation using fingerprint identification and background inquiry forms.
• Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check; discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
• Must complete Personal Identity Verification (PIV) using two forms of identification from the Form I-9.
• A valid State driver’s license is required to operate motor vehicles.
• Salary must be sent to a financial institution of choice via Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
• Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
• Work may include weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, and other than normal duty hours.
• Requires sitting, walking, long periods of standing, bending, and lifting moderate to heavy items up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of recreation equipment and its use in an aquatics setting.
• Knowledge of pool and waterfront safety rules.
• Knowledge of general aquatic facility upkeep and maintenance (e.g., cleaning, minor equipment repairs).
• Ability to identify hazards or hazardous situations and immediately recognize a patron’s need for assistance.
• Ability to conduct routine safety inspections of the facility and pool area to ensure compliance with environmental health standards.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work with hazardous and biohazardous materials (e.g., cleaning agents, pool chemicals, blood).
• Skill in providing customer service to a diverse group of people.
• Skill to act decisively in emergencies, identifying patrons in distress and responding appropriately.
• Skill to tactfully enforce water safety, facility rules, and regulations.
• Skill to conduct pool chemical testing, adjust chemical imbalances, and document results.
• Skill to exercise control over large groups of people.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part-time work. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, such as volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, social).

Education

Applicants can qualify based on education, experience, or a combination of both. If qualifying based on education, applicants must submit transcripts showing degree awards and coursework.

• 6 months or more of general experience AND 6 months or more of specialized experience, OR
• Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts), OR
• An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Certifications

• American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate or a higher-level equivalent certificate.
• Basic First Aid and CPR Certification.
• At least six (6) months of Lifeguard experience.
