Recreation Assistant (Fitness/Aquatic Support)

About the role

This position is assigned to the NAF Fitness/Sports/Fleet Readiness; Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) at Sports Zone Fitness Center in Yorktown, Virginia. The primary function of the position is to ensure proper usage of the facility and assist in the operation of the recreation activity.

Responsibilities

Duties include administrative support, instructional support, and facility/equipment maintenance. Specific tasks include:

• Providing customer service to patrons using the facility
• Checking identification cards to ensure only authorized users are entering the facility
• Issuing and receiving gear/equipment
• Registering patrons for facility use, events, and/or classes
• Answering telephone and providing information regarding facility hours of operation, upcoming special events and programs
• Completing Daily Activity Reports and handling cash where fees apply
• Assisting in planning, scheduling, and publicizing various activities and maintaining related supplies
• Overseeing the sale of retail items associated with activities
• Evaluating the effectiveness of ongoing Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) fitness activities
• Monitoring patrons, volunteers, and contractors at the assigned program/event and reporting any issues to management
• Assisting in the selection of fitness, sports, and aquatics activities to be offered
• Conducting instructional classes in the assigned recreational area
• Performing basic fitness orientation and identifying and correcting unsafe fitness techniques
• Demonstrating procedures common to the activities and instructing in the use of related equipment
• Ensuring adherence to regulations and safety procedures
• Ensuring facility and sporting fields are open and/or closed at the posted time
• Monitoring and checking the security of premises
• Maintaining athletic playing surfaces, equipment, and facilities
• Reporting maintenance problems, material deficiencies, and unsafe conditions or discrepancies

Requirements

Conditions of employment include passing all applicable records and background checks, successfully passing the E-Verify employment verification check, and possessing and maintaining a current driver's license. Starting May 7, 2025, non-affiliated individuals requesting access will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of identification to access CNRMA Installations.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate must possess knowledge of MWR policies, rules, and regulations involving the work area, basic arithmetic, cash handling procedures, and basic fitness, aquatics, and sports principles. They must also have skill in the use of Microsoft Office Programs and the ability to provide fitness, aquatics, and sports training or orientation. The ability to competently and independently carry out day-to-day recreation operations, develop and effectively deliver presentations and/or training, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing is also required.
