Recreation Aide I (Part-Time, Year Round)
About the Role
This is an entry-level recreation position assisting at playgrounds or other recreation areas. The employee helps deliver a diversified program that satisfies patrons of the recreation center. Responsibilities include ensuring the physical well-being and safety of participants while they are on the playground, in the recreation center, or traveling off-site. The role involves leading wholesome recreation programs to enlist the confidence and support of participants. Work assignments are received during staff meetings, with technical assistance available for detailed program planning and specialized activities.
Responsibilities
- Participates, assists, and leads games and other recreation activities.
- Teaches rules and playing skills of team and individual games and activities.
- Maintains safety and health standards at the center; provides first-aid to injured persons.
- Keeps and submits records of attendance and use of facilities.
- Issues and picks up athletic equipment.
- Represents the City positively in interactions with colleagues and clients, regardless of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation, belief, or sexual orientation.
- Establishes and maintains effective and professional relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and managers.
- Performs related work as required.
Requirements
Education/Experience:
- Required: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Preferred: One (1) year of experience in recreation or a related field.
- Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may substitute for the above requirements.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Valid Driver’s License with proof of automobile insurance.
- Acceptable background record.
- Acceptable driving record.
Skills
- Knowledge of principles, rules, materials, equipment, and organization of play and recreational activities (e.g., low-organized games, free play, team sports, art, and handicraft work), along with the ability to instruct, coach, and supervise such activities.
- Knowledge of play interests and developmental needs of age groups.
- Knowledge of first-aid principles and practices.
- Ability to inspire confidence and enthusiasm, mix readily with various groups, and solve problems arising at play areas.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, teens, adults, and the general public.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with colleagues, supervisors, managers, and the public.
Schedule
This position requires varied hours, which may include nights and weekends.
Additional Information
- All successful applicants will undergo an extensive background check, including criminal history searches, driving history checks, credit reports, courthouse searches, education verification, employment verification, and professional license verification.
- Applicants may be required to undergo a medical examination, including a drug screening, prior to appointment.
- Applicants considered for employment will be required to pay $62.00 for the background investigation.
- The City of Hollywood has an ordinance regulating the employment of relatives of City employees. Relatives may only be hired under specific conditions, including competing in an examination process and being among the top three ranked candidates.
- Newly hired employees must sign an affidavit affirming non-usage of tobacco or tobacco products within the last year prior to submission of the application and must remain non-users throughout employment.
- Veterans and their family members may receive preference and priority in hiring. Candidates must submit a copy of separation papers (DD214) and meet eligibility requirements as stipulated by Florida Statutes.
