About the role

Join us at Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH), part of the State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), as a Recovery Support Specialist. This role offers a unique opportunity to support clients in achieving their recovery goals.

Responsibilities

• Engage clients in defining personal recovery goals using evidence-based workbooks or person-centered planning tools.
• Motivate and guide clients in implementing their recovery plans, focusing on employment, education, community involvement, and natural supports.
• Support clients in identifying and exercising their rights, and participating in rehabilitative and recovery-oriented interventions.
• Provide information and support to clients, encouraging the development of community networks and activities.
• Train clients and families in recovery management techniques.
• Act as a peer health navigator to engage clients with co-morbid medical conditions in wellness activities.
• Secure and provide clients with relevant resources for their recovery needs.
• Support clients in managing stress and dealing with internal and external challenges.
• Accompany clients to medical/clinical appointments and volunteer opportunities.
• Organize and conduct workshops on recovery and wellness topics.
• Observe and report on clients' behavior, updating notes in the medical record as needed.
• Enter computerized data as required.
• Coach adaptive client behaviors through verbal communication.
• Perform outreach and transportation as needed.

Requirements

The ideal candidate should have six (6) months of experience working in the mental health and/or substance use recovery field. Six (6) months of experience as a Recovery Support Specialist Trainee may be substituted for the General Experience. Additional preferred qualifications include experience facilitating peer-led meetings, groups, or activities, working in an inpatient, behavioral health setting, providing recovery-oriented services for adults with severe mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders, and working with and communicating as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Qualifications

• Must possess and retain a recovery support certification.
• Must adhere to the DMHAS Peer Support Ethical Guidelines.

Skills

Knowledge of community support systems and resources, person-centered planning, Wellness Recovery Action Planning, and other recovery management techniques. Considerable interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, ability to observe and redirect client behavior, and utilize computer software.

Salary calculations are not necessarily comparable between branches of state government. Details on pay will be provided upon conditional offer of employment.

Schedule
