About the role
We are seeking 2 certified Peer Support Specialists or Certified Recovery Mentors to work in our low-barrier substance use disorders program at the BHRN-Behavioral Health Regional Network.
Responsibilities
- Works closely with other staff as a member of a treatment team to provide healthy staff-to-staff and staff-to-client relationships;
- Provides respectful and compassionate treatment is provided to all clients who request services and acts as a role model to clients to inspire hope and share life experiences as appropriate to the recovery process;
- Telephones contacts, which includes talking with clients who need support and to remind clients who are scheduled for assessments, groups, individual sessions, medication management appointments, and other BestCare services;
- Identifies recovering person’s abilities, strengths and assets and assist them to recognize and use them;
- Identifies barriers to full participation and focuses on strategies and resources to overcome them;
- Provides recovery mentor services at the hospital and manages a case load as assigned;
- Participates in group recovery sessions as needed;
- Provides services within the framework of the Intentional Peer Support model;
- Transports clients to some appointments, when appropriate, if approved by supervisor, including to/from outpatient services at BestCare, to other agencies when they need assistance with accessing benefits, and other;
- Provides referral to various services, when appropriate (i.e. Food Bank, LINC, primary care/medical services, community college, parenting, etc.);
- Ensures that client documentation in client EHR files is completed timely, complete, reflects clinical best practices, and meets State and BestCare standards;
- Maintains strong relationships with community partners, developing collaborative relationships whenever possible;
- Other related duties as assigned by the Program Manager.

Required competencies
- Strong understanding of person-centered services using a recovery-oriented focus;
- Good understanding trauma-informed care and the Intentional Peer Support model;
- Demonstrated ability to effectively engage clients, provide compassionate, supportive care, and to build and maintain respectful, trusting, empathetic, and collaborative mutual relationships with clients and family members;
- Proficiency in MS Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook), EHR platform, databases, virtual meeting platforms, internet, and ability to learn new or updated software;
- Able to maintain strict confidence as required by HIPAA, 42 CFR, and Oregon Statutes;
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills;
- Strong communication skills (oral and written);
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, accuracy, and follow-through;
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines;

Qualifications
- High School Diploma (or equivalent) required;
- Must meet the Oregon Administrative Rules definition of a peer: “any individual who has similar life experience, either as a current or former recipient of addictions or mental health services, or as a family member of an individual who is a current or former recipient of addictions or mental health services.”;
- For individuals in recovery from substance-use disorder, must have maintained continuous recovery for the previous two years at the time of hire.
- Must hold a Peer Support Specialist certification from a State-approved training program or ability/commitment to obtain within six (6) months with referral to IPS training by BestCare;
- CPR, First Aid and AED certification required or ability to obtain within 3 months;
- Must maintain a valid Oregon Driver License or ability to obtain one upon hire, and be insurable under the organization’s auto liability coverage policy (minimum 21 years of age and with no Type A violations in the past 3 years, or three (3) or more Type B violations).
