About the role
This position assists certificated staff by providing instructional support, job coaching, transit training, and other vocational and adaptive skills related to students' educational development.
Responsibilities
- Provide instructional support for IEP students.
- Provide job coaching in the community.
- Support and structure students needing behavior and social skills support.
- Aid students in developing functional skills leading to independence.
- Implement and reinforce social skills training programs.
- Assist certificated staff with record-keeping, material development, and teaching aid preparation.
- Carry out instructional programs developed by supervising teachers.
- Collaborate with community members and program staff.
- Absorb and apply instructional techniques under teacher supervision.
- Assess students and monitor their progress in the classroom and community.
- Provide transportation to and from community sites.
- Promote positive public relations when communicating with the public.
Other Functions
- Perform routine classroom and building clerical tasks as needed.
- Serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- AA Degree, 72 college level credits, or ability to pass the Federal Para-Educator test.
- Experience working with students in an educational setting and/or evidence of an interest in supporting learning experiences.
Skills
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and desire to learn about others' identities.
- Effective communication skills, including phone and email communication.
- The desire to be a positive role model for students.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Requirements
- Fingerprinting and background check required.
- Completion of Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.
- Completion of de-escalation procedures training upon hire.
- First Aid card or willingness to obtain one upon hire.
- Type II driver's license or willingness to obtain one upon hire.
Benefits
Para Educator on the PSE Classified Salary Schedule. A6 hours per day, 5 days per week, 189 days per school year; PSE Salary Schedule, Retirement, SEBB Benefits, 9 Holidays, Paid Sick Leave.
