Job Purpose Summary
The Psychiatric Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), also known as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), is responsible for providing comprehensive psychiatric care to residents in a licensed mental health residential facility. This includes psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis, medication management, and collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team to support recovery and stabilization.
Objectives and Key Results
- Patient needs to be seen within 24 hours of admission
- Able to complete a medication management appointment in 30 minutes
- Able to complete a psychiatric evaluation in 60 minutes
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, including mental status exams and diagnostic evaluations
- Diagnose and treat mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders in accordance with DSM-5 criteria
- Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications in compliance with Ohio laws and standards of care
- Develop, implement, and update individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the clinical team
- Provide ongoing medication management and follow-up care
- Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
- Educate residents and families on diagnoses, medications, and treatment plans
- Participate in case conferences, treatment team meetings, and quality improvement initiatives
Documentation
- Medication management/evaluations completed and signed within 24 hours
- Able to administer Long-Acting Injectables

Required Education/Qualifications
- Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited program
- Current licensure as an APRN in the State of practice
- Certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) through American Nurses Credentialing Center
- Current DEA registration and prescriptive authority in Ohio
- Active Certificate to Prescribe (CTP) in state of practice
- Minimum of [1–3] years of experience in psychiatric or behavioral health settings (residential experience preferred)
Required Experience
- Minimum of [1–3] years of experience in psychiatric or behavioral health settings (residential experience preferred)
Proper Knowledge and Skills
- Demonstrates sound knowledge of psychopharmacology, prescribing medications, and DEA/CDS regulations
- Demonstrates sound knowledge of ordering and interpreting lab work
- Demonstrates sound knowledge of diagnostic criteria, DSM-5
- Demonstrates sound knowledge of administration and interpretation of Clinical Assessment Tools such as AIMS, PHQ9, Columbia Scale
- Demonstrates sound knowledge of co-occurring disorders
- Demonstrates sound knowledge of crisis management and assessment/management of suicidal ideation
- Produces high quality and clinically appropriate documentation in a timely manner
