Responsibilities

  • Promote Safety: Take an active role in prioritizing safety throughout the operation for yourself and others at all times in accordance with MSHA and Vulcan standards.
  • Operate Train and Related Equipment: Assist in operating the train on its assigned route. Operate hand-controlled rail switches, manual hand-wheel brakes, uncoupling levers, and remote control devices.
  • Repair and Maintain Plant Equipment: Perform minor repairs and maintenance activities around the train to improve performance and safety, including replacing heavy coupling and replacing broken knuckles or air brake hoses.
  • Document and Record Information: Maintain and enter records of price, product, weight, and customer name into computers. Generate bills of sale, dray tickets, and bills of lading.
  • Perform General Physical Activities: Assist with the loading/unloading and operation of the train, including breaking/making trains and using high-pressure water hoses, pry bars, and shovels.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in the aggregate or construction industry is preferred.
  • Knowledge of general principles and practices regarding communication and train movements and operation is preferred.
  • Must be willing to work overtime and extended hours depending on company demands.
  • Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions and tolerate being exposed to loud noises.
  • Must have some knowledge of industrial tools, their uses, and maintenance.
