Rail Equipment Operator

Responsibilities

  • Receive and transmit information by radio and telephone
  • Read and understand bulletins, work orders, and switch lists
  • Aid and instruct train crews to couple and uncouple cars, operate switches
  • Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety
  • Operate locomotive equipment
  • Maintain switches for railcar movement
  • Operate railcar equipment such as air hoses and handbrakes
  • Comprehend color and/or hand signals and systems
  • Make precise adjustments in moving the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions
  • Respond quickly and repeatedly to visual symbols, signals, and displays (sound, light, picture, etc)

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license required
  • At least two years of verifiable mechanical experience
  • General knowledge of construction site and equipment
  • Previous work-related skill, knowledge, and/or experience preferred
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in ash management, structural fills and landfills preferred
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Qualifications

  • Must be able to climb, maintain body equilibrium, reach, grasp, bend and walk/stand/sit for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to display eye to hand coordination; depth perception required
  • Must be able to manipulate small parts with hands
  • Must be able to hear and see naturally or with correction
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds
  • Subject to loud noises
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions - one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odor, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation
