About the role

Under the general supervision of the Lead Technologist and following established procedures, performs a variety of technical radiologic procedures using standard, portable, and/or specialized x-ray equipment to apply prescribed ionizing radiation in order to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients’ illness and injuries. Performs related tasks such as assisting patients in positioning for correct anatomical exposure, maintaining order and cleanliness of work area, and performing routine clerical tasks.

Responsibilities

• Transfer, position, and instruct patients regarding the procedure to obtain and effect the desired radiographic diagnostic results as specified by the physician; utilize immobilization and other devices for holding or positioning the patient as necessary.
• Provide protection to unaffected areas of the body from radiation exposure utilizing lead shields in accordance with prescribed safety standards.
• Calculate and select proper technical factors such as voltage, current exposure time, and focal distance based on patient’s size, physical condition, and suspected pathology.
• Check equipment and accessories to ensure they are in proper operating condition.
• Assist physician in the performance of specialized examinations such as intravenous pyelography by preparing syringes and contrast media, holding and turning patients, administering barium contrast media, and passing instruments and supplies.
• Select and load proper film.
• Operate x-ray equipment according to specific diagnostic procedures and in conformance to established routines and techniques.
• Review processed film to ensure it is of acceptable quality and completeness for diagnostic purposes.
• Utilize portable x-ray equipment to execute diagnostic procedures in patient rooms, surgery, and other instances where it is not feasible to transfer the patient to a regular treatment room.
• Ensure films, examination requisitions, and other related records are properly completed for proper patient identification, statistical, and billing purposes.
• Maintain work area in a clean and orderly condition and ensure examination rooms are properly supplied with equipment and materials.
• Understand and practice ALARA principles of Radiation Protection, including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters.
• May provide guidance to students or other unit personnel in methods, techniques, and procedures.

Requirements

• Registration through the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists.
• Two years of formal training in an accredited School of Radiologic Technology.
• Current and valid license from the Department of Health to practice in the State of Rhode Island.
• Ability to operate all types of x-ray and related equipment, push portable equipment, transfer, and position patients.
• Conceptual ability to determine means of providing requested radiographs of acceptable diagnostic quality based on specifics of each case.
• Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
• Between one and three months of orientation and on-the-job training to become familiar with job responsibilities.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

• Main Radiology Department or smaller satellite operation with little discomfort due to noise, dust, or temperature.
• Exposure to radiation, with minimal risk of illness or injury when established safety procedures are followed.
• Continuous standing, walking, pushing of portable radiographic equipment, lifting, and positioning of patients is required.
• Some exposure to odors from human waste and chemicals from automatic film processing equipment.

Pay

$34.01-$55.55 per hour.

Schedule

• Work Type: 20 Hours/First Shift (Shift 4).
• Schedule: Monday 3:30 PM – 12:00 AM, Saturday 7:30 AM – 8:00 PM.
• Work Shift: Variable.
