About the role
Under the general supervision of the Lead Technologist and following established procedures, performs a variety of technical radiologic procedures using standard, portable, and/or specialized x-ray equipment to apply prescribed ionizing radiation in order to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients’ illness and injuries.
Responsibilities
- Assists patients in positioning for correct anatomical exposure
- Maintains order and cleanliness of work area
- Performs routine clerical tasks
- Positions and instructs patients regarding the procedure in order to obtain and effect the desired radiographic diagnostic results as specified by the physician
- Utilizes immobilization and other devices for holding or positioning the patient as necessary
- Provides protection to unaffected areas of the body from radiation exposure utilizing lead shield in accordance with prescribed safety standards
- Calculates and selects proper technical factors such as voltage, current exposure time and focal distance based on such information as patient’s size, physical condition and suspected pathology
- Checks equipment and accessories to insure they are in proper operating condition
- Operates x-ray equipment according to specific diagnostic procedure and in conformance to established routines and techniques
- Selects and loads proper film
- Reviews processed film to ensure that it is of acceptable quality and completeness for diagnostic purposes
- Operates portable x-ray equipment to execute diagnostic procedures in patient rooms, surgery and in other instances where it is not feasible to transfer the patient to regular treatment room
- Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition and ensures that examination rooms are properly supplied with equipment and materials
- Ensures that films, examination requisitions and other related records are properly completed for proper patient identification, statistical and billing purposes
- May provide guidance to students or other unit personnel in methods, techniques and procedures
Requirements
- Registration through the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists as well as two years formal training in an accredited School of Radiologic Technology required
- Current and valid license from the Department of Health to practice in the State of Rhode Island
- Ability to operate all types of x-ray and related equipment, push portable equipment, transfer and position patients
- Conceptual ability to determine means of providing requested radiographs of acceptable diagnostic quality based on specifics of each case
- Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process
Qualifications
- Experience Between one and three months orientation and on-the-job training in order to become familiar with job responsibilities
Skills
- Understanding and practicing ALARA principles of Radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters
