Job Summary
Performs outpatient and/or inpatient Radiographic procedures using mobile and stationary equipment within the pertinent clinical settings of General Diagnostics, Fluoroscopy, Mobile Radiography, Emergency Radiography, and Mobile Radiographic and Fluoroscopic procedures in the Operating Room.
Essential Functions
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
- Performs simple and complex radiographic procedures within the clinical setting by proper application of the required imaging and ancillary equipment with minimal supervision.
- Accurately performs examinations using stationary and mobile radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment.
- Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws (HIPAA) and the facility’s policies and procedures.
- Verifies proper patient identification and exam ordered to ensure correct patient imaging is performed.
- Reviews patient medical history and results of prior diagnostic tests to validate imaging needs.
- Ensures images are properly identified with correct patient identification and lead markers.
- Reviews and assures requisition is properly completed with date, time, tech initials, number of images and clinical history.
- P practices radiation protection by calculating and selecting proper technical factors based on patient’s age, physical condition, and suspected pathology.
- Effectively utilizes beam limiting devices, protective apparel, and immobilization devices.
- Prepares exam room and X-ray equipment to conduct X-ray examinations in accordance with infectious disease, sterilization and patient safety, protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Determines appropriate sequence to conduct multiple procedures and patient prioritization.
- Captors exams with other departments as necessary.
- Abides by, and maintains a working knowledge of institutional policy and TJC policy on patient safety goals and guidelines.
- Orients and trains new staff members in department procedures and equipment.
- Provides instruction and assists with education of radiography students approved for such training.
Legacy Essential Functions
- Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition and ensures same is properly supplied for diagnostic procedures.
- Ensures sterile supplies are not damaged or expired.
- Ensures proper function of suction machines and oxygen outlets in work area.
- Orients and trains new staff members in department procedures and equipment.
- Provides instruction to radiography students approved for such training.
Education
- Completion of certification program from a school of Radiologic Technology, Associate’s Degree and/or Bachelor’s Degree in radiology or associated field of study required.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Interpersonal skills to interact and communicate effectively with patients, patient care givers, physicians, and other department personnel and coworkers to ensure quality patient care and present positive department and interdepartmental cooperation.
- Possesses a high degree of flexibility and ability to adapt quickly to changing demand.
- Analytical skills to make independent decisions when dealing with complex equipment, sedation of patients, and critical care patients.
- Strong critical thinking, problem solving and attentiveness to detail required.
- Knowledge of diagnostic radiology principles and procedures as well as operation and maintenance of radiologic equipment as acquired through completion of an approved curriculum of Radiologic Technology.
- Basic computer skills to operate a computer efficiently and effectively.
- Ability to respond to clinical and administrative emergencies.
- An understanding of Children’s Wisconsin health care delivery system and the impact of other health care delivery systems on the patient and family.
