About the role
This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Responsibilities
- Report to the Program Director for the Associate Laboratory Directorate for the Weapons Engineering Office of Design Agency Quality (ALDW-DAQ) and be a contributing member to a dynamic team of engineers and quality professionals responsible for engaging with system and test engineers, surveillance engineers, production liaisons, and production organization quality personnel responsible for nuclear weapon development, testing, design, realization, and surveillance.
- Work in a quality engineering role working as part of product realization teams, facilitating and documenting Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEA), ensuring necessary and sufficient operational controls, and monitoring ongoing activities which support nuclear weapon-related activities.
- Evaluate subversion risks in support of Nuclear Enterprise Assurance for weapon programs, including cyber-assurance.
- Operate independently and exercise personal initiative in successfully completing assigned tasks.
- Apply technical expertise in hardware design, fabrication, and knowledge of engineering practices/theory to meet programmatic deliverables.
- Work daily in a classified setting, demonstrating a strong commitment towards security, safety and compliance.
- Involvement in travel to National Security Enterprise locations with varying frequency.
Requirements
- R&D Engineer 2: Working knowledge of QA systems and/or performance-based audits, assessments, and surveillances; Working knowledge in the facilitation and documentation of FMEA; Foundation in basic statistics; Ability to interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings and schematics; Familiarity with ASME Y14.5M standard; Knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: aerospace, chemical, computer, cybersecurity, electrical, mechanical, or nuclear engineering; Ability to document technical reports; Demonstrated success in providing customer service and establishing strong customer relations; Ability to foster an environment of teamwork, quality, technical excellence, innovation, and creativity; Ability to develop and present training materials on quality or policy topics; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Proven record of success participating in cross-organizational teams; Proven ability to recognize technical problems, and apply analysis and testing, if necessary, to generate suitable solutions and effectively document and communicate results; Proven skills and experience in completing moderately complex assignments successfully under pressure; Strong analytical ability and innovative thinking; Demonstrated responsibility for independent actions, decision-making and accountability within their areas of responsibility, managing multiple tasks with moderate supervision.
- R&D Engineer 3: Ability to assist and/or lead in QA system development and maintenance and/or performance-based audits, assessments, and surveillances; Strong foundation in basic statistics; Demonstrated ability to recognize technical problems, and apply analysis and testing, if necessary, to generate suitable solutions and effectively document and communicate results; Demonstrated track record of fostering an environment of teamwork, quality, technical excellence, innovation, and creativity; Ability to lead the development and presentation of training materials on quality or policy topics; Proven record of success leading cross-organizational teams; Proven skills and experience in completing complex assignments successfully under pressure; Advanced level of analytical ability and innovative thinking; Demonstrated responsibility for independent actions, decision-making and accountability within their areas of responsibility, managing multiple tasks with minimal supervision; Ability to manage high-visibility projects in a challenging safety and/or security setting; Ability to provide direction to less experienced personnel within the team.
Qualifications
- R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
- R&D Engineer 3: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced degree in science or engineering highly desired.
- Nationally recognized quality engineering related certification such as American Society of Quality's Certified Quality Engineer, Reliability Engineer, or equivalent.
- Certified Quality Auditor or similar credential.
- Experience working in a design or manufacturing environment.
- Experience auditing and working with suppliers of materials, parts, or assemblies.
- Familiarity with nuclear weapon systems, design, production, or surveillance.
- Knowledge of weapon quality system requirements (DOE/NNSA weapons quality policy NAP 401.1A).
- Ability to use statistical methods to analyze issues, failures, and effectiveness of controls.
- Working knowledge of requirement databases (DOORS, etc.).
- Working knowledge of Model-Based Systems Engineering (Cameo, etc.).
- Working knowledge of software quality assurance.
- Knowledge and application of cybersecurity concepts and one or more cybersecurity certifications (CompTIA, CISSP, CISA, CISM, CEH, etc.).
