Quarterly Lecturer - Physics Lab Instructor

About the role

This is a temporary, quarterly lecturer (non‑tenure track) position in the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics at Santa Clara University. The instructor will teach 1–5 sections of weekly lower‑division laboratory courses (Physics 12, 31, or 33) during winter quarter 2027, with each section counting as 1/3 or 1/2 of a course. The successful candidate will teach no more than two courses in any quarter and no more than four courses over the fall, winter, and spring quarters. Each course runs for 10 weeks and is delivered in‑person, though instruction may move online if county health conditions deteriorate.

Responsibilities

• Work with senior lab staff to demonstrate knowledge of weekly labs before meeting with students.
• Conduct and attend all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner, demonstrating command of the discipline and effective presentation skills.
• Grade student lab work each week and provide timely feedback.
• Assist with one make‑up lab session.
• Submit student grades that are appropriate, accurate, and fair measures of student performance.
• Administer numerical and narrative course evaluations for all courses.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Physics or a related field.

Qualifications

• Significant experience teaching physics at the university level.
• Demonstrated experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.

Pay

Salary range: $4,776 per lab course.

Schedule

Winter quarter begins January 4, 2027. Each course runs for 10 weeks. The instructor may teach 1–5 sections of weekly lower‑division laboratory courses (Physics 12, 31, or 33), with each section counting as 1/3 or 1/2 of a course.
