About the role

As Quarry Manager, you will coordinate and supervise quarry operations to ensure an adequate supply of raw material meets plant production needs. This position makes decisions regarding quarry operations and maintenance, analyzes unusual problems, and provides oversight of capital expenditures and budget preparation for the quarry.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and follow all plant safety guidelines.
  • Establish, communicate, and assign job responsibilities, goals, and performance standards for employees within the Quarry Department; evaluate job performance.
  • Conduct surveillance of quarry maintenance and operations through inspections.
  • Ensure and participate in quarry department safety meetings and safety inspections of work areas; perform periodic spot checks to ensure compliance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Oversee all aspects of the maintenance department and monitor production needs to ensure sufficient rock availability for manufacturing.
  • Promote job performance through motivation, goal-setting, and feedback.
  • Oversee all aspects of quarry operations involving explosives, ensuring proper storage and availability.
  • Evaluate performance and recommend merit increases and promotions.
  • Maintain specified records of quarry and mining activities.
  • Coordinate and supervise the work of contractors for specified repairs.
  • Prepare reports and other specified paperwork as requested by management.
  • Meet with vendors regarding new maintenance equipment and supplies.
  • Support and participate in plant/quarry safety and environmental programs; inspect work sites for proper cleanup procedures.
  • Actively lead and participate in the Maintenance Excellence Process.
  • Coordinate production operations with other department managers to supply needed raw materials while providing maintenance time on quarry equipment.
  • Plan long-term quarry development goals, including mine exploration.
  • Coordinate with plant management on priorities and schedules for plant projects.
  • Assist with the preparation of annual budgets and specifications for purchased equipment; coordinate purchased materials with plant needs.
  • Work with Planner to review, plan, schedule, and supervise all maintenance, repair, and preventive/predictive maintenance activities.
  • Investigate and resolve unusual problems or difficulties in maintenance projects.
  • Maintain awareness of current industry trends and practices by reading trade and industry publications.
  • Specify engineering data and solicit competitive pricing for major equipment and parts.
  • Schedule repairs and other maintenance with the Maintenance Department as needed; order and obtain parts and equipment.
  • Coordinate with storeroom personnel regarding supplies and parts needed for maintenance activities.
  • Compile records and data regarding maintenance projects and prepare reports for management.
  • Ensure maintenance personnel comply with plant and MSHA safety rules and regulations.
  • Participate in labor contract negotiations; investigate and resolve problems before they become grievances.
  • Meet with union representatives as needed; conduct and participate in plant/union safety committee activities.
  • Conduct monthly safety meetings and train employees on safety regulations and standards; evaluate safety hazards proactively and investigate accidents.
  • Collaborate with Plant Manager to discuss goals and strategic planning; ensure directives are achieved.
  • Review and approve invoices in the absence of the Plant Manager; perform other Plant Manager duties on a relief basis.
  • Recommend improvements to enhance plant and quarry productivity and employee morale.
  • Review maintenance reports and analyze trends; assist Plant Manager in preparing annual budgets.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • 4-year/Bachelor’s Degree in mining, geology, or engineering.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in mining operations.
  • Minimum of 5 years as a quarry supervisor preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand warning labels, instructions, and signs.
  • Proficient in English written, verbal communication, and listening skills.
  • Ability to lead and manage others; instill a commitment to organizational goals.
  • Knowledge of regulated environments; ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems quickly.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with a high level of accuracy under pressure.
  • Thorough and dependable; ability to make sound independent judgments regularly.
  • Ability to work under general supervision with specific policies, practices, and objectives.
  • Knowledge of quarry operations, including optimizing resources, mine planning, equipment use, and safe explosives procedures.
  • Knowledge of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) safety regulations and state/federal mining laws.
  • General knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) environmental regulations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of mining/geology principles and procedures.
