About the Role

The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) invites outstanding candidates for an experimental scientist in the Quantum Materials Systems (QMS) thrust. CINT is a national user facility funded by the DOE Office of Science to provide research capabilities in nanoscience to a worldwide community of users. Scientific thrusts in CINT include Quantum Materials Systems; Nanophotonics and Optical Nanomaterials; Soft, Biological and Composite Nanomaterials; and In-Situ Characterization and Nanomechanics. The successful candidate will perform scientific research both independently and collaboratively with CINT users, in areas related to the QMS thrust's research themes, such as fabrication of emerging materials for quantum systems and microelectronic devices, synthesis of emerging materials, demonstration of device architectures based on quantum and semiconducting nanomaterials, discovering emergent phenomena in quantum materials, and transport and dynamics of quantum materials systems. The selected candidate will be expected to develop collaborative relationships with CINT users, contribute to the strategic direction for CINT, and actively collaborate with researchers at CINT and LANL. Responsibilities

  • Carry out a vigorous program of scientific research and support CINT user science in the area of quantum and microelectronic materials.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with CINT users and contribute to the strategic direction for CINT.
  • Actively collaborate with researchers at CINT and LANL.
  • Interact with sponsors to develop fundamental and applied research programs.

Scientist 3 level additional responsibilities:

  • Contribute substantially to setting the strategic directions for the QMS Thrust.
  • Interact with a broad set of sponsors who may benefit from CINT advances in areas ranging from national security to applied energy programs.

Requirements

  • Experience performing high-impact research in the areas of emerging materials and devices.
  • Record of scientific research achievements (publications, citations, presentations, intellectual properties) in the areas of quantum and microelectronic materials.
  • Experience developing experimental capabilities for two or more among the three topics: 1) materials synthesis, 2) micro/nanofabrication, 3) transport measurements.
  • Experience in the peer review of publications.
  • Formal education in a relevant area of quantum and microelectronic materials.
  • Outstanding verbal and writing skills and a record of effective technical communication.

Additional requirements for Scientist 3 level:

  • Experience leading research as a principal investigator.
  • Experience supervising technical support personnel and/or research group.
  • Experience developing collaborative research projects.
  • Recognized national reputation as evidenced by invited presentations and services on scientific societal committees at national level.

Qualifications

Education/Experience at Scientist 2 level: Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Scientist 3 level: Master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Skills

  • Strong background in basic science and engineering of emerging materials.
  • Expertise in fabrication, synthesis, and electrical characterization (desirable).
  • A relevant PhD with postdoctoral experience in a relevant field (desired).
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge of techniques in nanoscience (desired).
  • Experience with various nano and quantum materials, such as topological insulators, semiconductors, transition metal oxides, two-dimensional materials (desired).
  • Experience with machine learning for materials science (desired).
  • Experience working with or at a national user facility (desired).
  • Experience mentoring students and/or postdocs (desired).
  • Experience with proposal writing (desired).
  • Familiarity with the DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences (DOE-BES) (desired).

Pay

  • Scientist 2: $106,400 - $176,000
  • Scientist 3: $128,000 - $215,900

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
