Quality Improvement Consultant
About the Role
This role leads the on-site facilitation of system-wide, strategic clinical quality improvement projects. The Quality Improvement Consultant builds relationships with multidisciplinary teams, providing consultation and support to achieve measurable outcome improvements. Utilizing quality improvement methodology and tools, this individual collaborates with clinical leaders to develop aim statements, key driver diagrams, establish key metrics, and interpret and present quality data using sophisticated data analysis. Projects are assigned based on organizational needs and require effective project planning and management to meet Children’s Health quality strategic goals.
This role also leads and participates in clinical effectiveness projects aimed at standardizing care through evidence-based clinical guidelines and protocols, and partners with the health equity team to reduce healthcare disparities.
Responsibilities
- Leads multidisciplinary teams through the development of quality indicators and identifies opportunities for improvement to monitor and evaluate the quality of care and services provided to patients based on evidence-based practices, regulatory and accrediting agency requirements, and data analysis of high-risk, problem-prone, and high-volume processes.
- Facilitates on-site improvement projects using scientifically proven quality improvement methodology, rapidly learning and applying improvement science principles, steps, and tools.
- Provides professional leadership, coaching, and support for Hospital-wide and departmental quality improvement programs, projects, and initiatives.
- Communicates effectively, clearly, concisely, and persuasively at all levels of the organization, demonstrating active listening, appropriate responses, and effective conflict navigation.
- Develops and maintains professional, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., physicians, clinical leaders, data analytics, patient safety) to ensure alignment in achieving quality outcomes.
- Develops and delivers presentations to groups in training or facilitation roles.
- Collaborates with QI/PI consultants and advisors to develop presentations and documents that articulate a compelling storyline through effective data use.
- Collaborates with the system quality director to develop quality improvement curricula, design program interventions, and create data strategies to increase organizational expertise.
- Analyzes quality and safety performance data against internal and external benchmarks to identify improvement opportunities; facilitates teams in developing internal benchmarks when necessary.
- Performs complex project tasks, prioritizes multiple projects, and works under pressure to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Uses sophisticated data analysis methods within quality improvement projects (e.g., run charts, process control charts, and other statistical analyses).
- Facilitates the development of clinical guidelines and protocols, including leveraging order sets, Best Practice Alerts, and other electronic forms.
- Works with applicable staff to utilize audit strategies, data extraction, expert observation, surveys, focus groups, or other tools to obtain relevant information for improving care and service quality.
- Supports clinical teams in developing posters, abstracts, and manuscripts related to quality improvement projects.
- Remains up-to-date on healthcare quality standards and best practices; participates in healthcare quality conferences and educational offerings.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in a healthcare clinical practice.
- At least 2 years of experience in quality, process improvement, or equivalent.
- Four-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; graduate or professional work or advanced degree preferred.
- Current RN license to practice nursing in the State of Texas (required upon hire).
- Lean Six Sigma certification preferred.
- CPHQ (Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality) preferred.
