Quality Engineer - Manufacturing
About the role
Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests, and manufactures engines ranging from 0.5 to 18L, used in various applications including marine, petroleum, industrial, electric generators, and locomotives. As part of Caterpillar’s commitment to sustainability, IPSD is actively involved in developing green energy solutions.
Responsibilities
- Identify and assist with implementing improvements to assembly processes to reduce defects, reduce downtime, and improve overall product quality
- Monitor quality processes, diagnose issues, and lead troubleshooting efforts to restore and maintain factory quality
- Conduct hands-on investigations to determine root cause and provide short-term and long-term corrective actions
- Collaborate and support the Small Business Team to communicate emerging issues and drive corrective action on existing issues
- Conduct and maintain control plan creation and maintenance in addition to PFMEA reviews to identify risks, drive preventive actions, and ensure process robustness
- Participate in and help adopt Caterpillar’s Safety Driven strategy and culture
- Investigate and resolve internal and external quality defects in diesel engine assembly, using root cause analysis and corrective actions
- Review reports and data for review with cross-functional teams including manufacturing engineering, test engineering, and factory operations
- Present to leadership opportunities for improvement and current issue actions for found defects in the factory and at the customer
- Collaborate closely with other Quality department team members to ensure replication of improvements are adopted and cross training/knowledge sharing can take place
- Coach and support production and technical teams to strengthen problem-solving capabilities and drive operational excellence
Requirements
Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment
Leverage Lean Manufacturing: Knowledge of philosophy, principles, and implementation approaches of lean manufacturing; ability to integrate and implement lean manufacturing philosophy into existing production and management processes
Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational, or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations
Quality Management System (QMS): Knowledge of Quality Management System's (QMS) functions, features, and capabilities; ability to design, implement, test, and maintain Quality Management Systems to consistently meet customer requirements and regulatory compliances
Root Cause Corrective Action: Utilization of the 5-Why technique, fish bone diagram, and other RCCA methodologies
Time Management: Knowledge of prioritization and planning techniques; ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Collaboration: Knowledge of team dynamics and cross-functional engagement; ability to work effectively with diverse teams to achieve shared manufacturing goals
Tools: Experience with common hand measurement tools such as calipers and depth gages
Measurement: Working knowledge of reading CMM reports and a basic understanding of GD&T
Data Analytics: Experience with Power BI and understanding of statistical process controls
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality Management, or related field
Experience: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in quality engineering or related field
Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and ability to work independently and collaboratively
Benefits
Pay Range: $81,370.00 - $122,060.00
Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience.

Schedule
This position requires working onsite five days a week.
