About the Role
The Quality Engineer plays a critical role in interpreting company and customer quality requirements, translating them to support all phases of the manufacturing cycle, and collaborating closely with colleagues to develop workable quality instructions and procedures. This position requires a highly motivated, energetic individual who can work with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities.
Responsibilities
- Perform quality engineering functions in a low-volume, high-mix machine shop.
- Demonstrate proficiency in first article reports and a working understanding of AS9102C.
- Manage quality for strategic customer accounts, lead failure analysis efforts, and document findings for stakeholders.
- Create and maintain customer-required PPAPs (PFMEA, Process Maps, Process FMEA, Gage R&R).
- Interpret customer drawings and develop/approve incoming inspection plans.
- Apply 8D problem-solving methodologies.
- Interact with quality inspectors, machinists, and suppliers to address quality issues and drive improvements through the corrective action process, including follow-up auditing.
- Conduct ISO9001:2015 / AS9100:2016 internal audits to ensure compliance with internal QMS and external customer requirements; issue and track corrective actions as needed.
- Assist with calibration and maintenance of metrology equipment.
- Perform other related departmental tasks as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field (Mechanical/Electrical Engineering) preferred with a minimum of 5+ years’ experience, or 7+ years of relevant direct experience.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in an Aerospace machining environment is strongly preferred.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, multi-task, and set daily priorities.
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Access (or ability to quickly learn database construction and maintenance).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Thorough knowledge of problem-solving and quality improvement tools (e.g., 8D reports, fault tree, PFMEA, control plans).
- Experience performing AS9100 or ISO9001 internal audits, documenting findings, and following up on corrections.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Supplier quality and development experience is a plus.
- Occasional travel may be required.
Physical Requirements
- Sitting, standing, and walking throughout the facility.
- Talking, seeing, hearing, and tactile sensing.
- Bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, reaching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 35 lbs.
- Wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Ability to work at a desk or in front of a computer for extended periods.
- Near vision in at least one eye (corrected or uncorrected) equivalent to J2 at 12".
Working Environment
The role involves splitting time between a general office environment and a manufacturing floor, with safety hazards typical of these settings.
