About the role
HII Unmanned Systems is seeking an experienced Supplier Quality Engineer to oversee the Quality Management System (QMS) for unmanned surface vessel (USV) programs. The ideal candidate must possess 5+ years of relevant experience with a bachelor's degree or 3+ years with a master's degree, or 0 years with a PhD or Juris Doctorate, and be willing to travel up to 26-50%.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Sub-contract Management Team to ensure sub-contractor Statement of Work (SOW) quality requirements are defined and met.
- Collaborate with design teams to ensure quality assurance and control requirements are accounted for early in the program lifecycle.
- Conduct supplier and sub-contractor audits to ensure compliant performance, drive process standardization, waste elimination, and continuous improvement.
- Travel to supplier locations to ensure quality requirement clarity, conduct capability or quality risk assessments, and/or resolve quality problems.
- Travel to other HII sites to lead quality improvement initiatives and/or quality assurance assessments as it relates to USV programs.
- Collaborate with other mission partners, both across HII as well as external strategic partners, to ensure a robust USV quality program.
- Work with purchasing to ensure supplier performance is regularly reported and that appropriate and timely corrective actions are implemented.
- Maintain and update critical supplier audit system and schedule.
- Monitor, communicate, and improve key supply chain KPI’s, including Supplier OTD (Past due), DPPM and waste.
- Establish specific short/long-term supplier quality goals.
- Champion problem-solving and root cause analysis activities with suppliers and customers to eliminate recurrence of non-conformances.
- Develop long-term supplier relationships and generate and implement cost reduction ideas.
- Strategically lead supplier performance improvement projects to increase supplier capability of consistently meeting our requirements.
- Communicate engineering and manufacturing specifications to supplier technical teams.
- Actively manage suppliers to ensure there are no regressions with the implementation of new processes.
- Aide in the new, probationary, and rejected supplier transition processes.
- Assure compliance to all applicable legal requirements pertaining to the environmental aspects and impacts.
- Initiate action to prevent the occurrence of any non-conformities relating to product, process, and quality systems.
- Identify and record any problems relating to the product, process, and quality system, initiate, recommend, or provide solutions.
Qualifications
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work with diverse groups of people, and independent functioning.
- Shipyard construction or quality oversight of boat fabrication experience.
- Willingness to travel up to 30%.
- Experience or certification in weld inspections preferred.
- Experience in US Coast Guard (USCG) and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) governed environments associated with naval/commercial ships preferred.
- Experience in ISO 9000 or AS9100 manufacturing environment preferred.
- Understanding of project management and Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) requirements.
- Knowledge of various quality system methodologies 8D, Lean, 5 Why’s, Pareto Analysis, Six Sigma, 8-D, DFMEA, PFEMA, PPAP, etc. preferred.
