Quality Control Specialist

About the role

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, the Quality Control Specialist performs physical and chemical testing for the plant, maintains laboratory equipment, and ensures products meet specifications (e.g., ASTM, AASHTO). This role promotes and follows all plant safety guidelines, including proactive hazard reporting and adherence to the See Stop Do culture.

Responsibilities

• Conduct laboratory tests to ensure products meet specifications.
• Perform all required chemical testing on plant product, raw materials, and processed materials, including:
  • Loss on ignition
  • Insoluble residue
  • 30µ and 325 mesh screen testing
  • Blaine
  • X-ray elemental analysis (fused bead and/or pressed pellet)
  • Free lime and CO2 determination
  • Other tests as needed
• Prepare chemical solutions used in analyses.
• Record all x-ray analyses in the company’s electronic database.
• Maintain documentation and records of chemical tests, lab waste, and other required records.
• Maintain and calibrate chemical testing equipment with assistance from the Chief Chemist.
• Manage inventory of required testing materials.
• Assist other lab personnel as needed.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment.
• Report any out-of-specification samples or issues to the Chief Chemist.
• Act as the XRF Champion for the plant, fulfilling all responsibilities outlined in the CRH XRF Policy.
• Attend professional workshops and seminars for job-related development.
• Perform additional duties related to plant operations as assigned by supervisors.

Requirements

• B.A./B.S. degree in chemistry (preferred) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• One year of experience performing relevant tests in a cement laboratory environment (preferred).
• Proficiency in English written and verbal communication skills.
• Understanding of warning labels, instructions, and safety signs.
• Knowledge of the cement manufacturing process, including kiln burning, mill grinding, and cement/clinker/raw mix chemistry.
• Familiarity with chemical analysis theories, procedures, and guidelines in chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
• Ability to perform precise and accurate analysis with minimal supervision and close attention to detail.
• Ability to develop and follow comprehensive technical directions.
• Proficiency in operating physical testing equipment and laboratory computers.
• Strong mathematical, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to manage time effectively and work under pressure.
• Physical ability to lift, push, or pull up to 80 lbs.
