About the role
The Purchasing Manager is responsible for managing strategic activities to ensure that materials are sourced with suppliers that meet quality and performance standards at a competitive price. This role manages selected major commodities representing high dollar value and/or critical impact on manufacturing operations, performs sourcing activities, and manages the supply chain for new product launches.
Responsibilities
- Based on the total cost of ownership, source and establish supply arrangements with new and existing suppliers for raw materials used in the manufacture of the company’s protective packaging products.
- Support the sourcing and purchasing requirements for the company’s R&D efforts and new product development process.
- Evaluate the current supply base for major categories and develop/integrate new or existing suppliers to support current and future requirements of the business for existing product lines and new products resulting from innovation projects.
- Negotiate and establish formal and informal purchasing agreements and contracts required for the company’s ongoing supply of raw materials.
- Manage and support the company’s tactical purchasing, including inventory planning and replenishment buying process.
- Oversee the purchase execution process, including the expediting and de-expediting of materials.
- Centrally manage the company’s supplier terms and conditions of business, including the management and administration of supplier pricing.
- Manage and monitor supplier performance, including overall service requirements and quality. Troubleshoot off-standard conditions and ensure proper root cause analysis is completed, with corrective actions implemented and adhered to.
- Provide necessary management reporting, including spend and cost analysis, purchase price variance (PPV), and overall measurement of performance of the supply base.
- Work with manufacturing operations on assigned projects and best practices required to support the company’s business growth efforts and operational efficiencies.
- Mediate price/quality disputes and work with suppliers to implement corrective actions.
- Perform demand and supply market analysis to assess short-term and long-term pricing trends, raw material availability, and industry capacities.
- Monitor supplier performance and recommend the addition/removal of suppliers from the approved supplier list.
- Perform annual quality assessments using the FHCS Global Quality Assessment Guidelines.
- Manage and implement annual cost-saving projects per assigned targets.
- Organize and conduct meetings with internal customers and suppliers.
- Interact with other internal groups concerning technical matters, conveying ideas, and recommending possible solutions to problems.
- Related tasks as requested by supervisor.
Requirements
- BS Degree in Business Management or related discipline.
- 5-7 years of purchasing management experience working in a manufacturing environment.
- Proficient with MS Office Suite.
- Industry experience in plastics or packaging preferred.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work in a matrix organization and collaborate across departments.
- Approximately 20% travel required.
- Advanced level of negotiating skills needed for involvement in supplier contract processes and cost reductions.
- Formal Project Management training is preferred.
