Purchasing & Inventory Control Specialist
About the Role
The Purchasing & Inventory Specialist will order materials, supplies, and equipment, follow up with vendors on shipment and delivery schedules, and assist the Purchasing Manager in maintaining proper inventory levels. This position also performs warehouse activities, including loading and unloading trucks, pick-up and delivery of parts, and assisting in expediting deliveries. The role supports the vendor bidding process, prepares reports, and provides administrative and warehousing support to ensure effective communication with vendors and internal customers.
This role works under general supervision with routine duties performed independently. Typical work hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with occasional Saturdays and overtime as needed. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) may be required.
Responsibilities
- Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures; report unsafe conditions to supervisors.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area in accordance with company, MSHA, and OSHA standards.
- Examine shipment contents and compare with records (manifests, invoices, or orders) to verify accuracy.
- Requisition and store shipping materials and supplies to maintain inventory.
- Record shipment data, such as weight, charges, damages, or discrepancies, for reporting and accounting.
- Keep records of items shipped, received, or transferred between Sunrock locations.
- Compile reports on production or inventory changes.
- Find, sort, or move goods between different parts of the business.
- Check inventory records for accuracy.
- Safely operate a forklift to load/unload trucks and place parts and materials on storage racks.
- Safely operate a flatbed truck (non-CDL) for pick-up and delivery of parts in the Raleigh-Durham area.
- Act as custodian of the Computerized Maintenance Management Information System (CMMIS), managing work orders, mechanics’ time, purchase orders, and stock requisitions.
- Process purchase orders accurately and timely based on need-by dates and order quantities.
- Review vendor order confirmations for accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
- Arrange freight and manage trucking logistics.
- Negotiate pricing and terms for goods and services.
- Assist in soliciting bids, compiling data for comparison, and reviewing requests.
- Contact vendors to schedule or expedite deliveries, resolve shortages, or address other issues.
- Create and deactivate inventory items.
- Work with Accounts Payable to ensure accuracy between purchase requisitions and invoices.
- Maintain basic filing and recordkeeping.
- Assist in preparing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) as directed by the Purchasing Manager.
- Assist with physical inventories.
- Participate in team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
- Administer records retention and destruction procedures according to company policy.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school preferred.
- One to two years of related experience in warehousing, inventory control, or a similar industry.
- Current North Carolina Driver’s License.

- Proficient in personal computer skills, including email, databases, word processing, and spreadsheets.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and interact well with others.

Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with occasional Saturdays and overtime as required.
