Essential Job Functions

  • Operate heavy equipment such as dozer, grader, front-end loader, backhoe, mower, excavator, etc. to perform a variety of road maintenance, repair, construction duties, and other assigned tasks relating to roads, bridges, and right of ways.
  • Operates a dump truck to deliver materials for road work including dirt, gravel, and asphalt; operate a tractor-trailer to deliver equipment to work sites
  • Install and maintain ditches and drainage culverts, guardrails, fences, roadway signs, traffic control devices, and other items and equipment that enhance the safety of County highways and drives.
  • Prepare roads for accessibility, which includes preparing shoulder, spraying chemicals, laying gravel, etc.; assists in the building, repair, and re-habilitation of new and substandard roads, including culvert installation, road shaping, etc.
  • Perform winter road maintenance and snow removal through plowing, sanding, and other activities to ensure that roads remain passable.
  • Verify, file and maintain all documents

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent (preferred)
  • 1 year experience truck driving OR 3 years’ experience operating heavy equipment
  • Valid driver’s license- Class A CDL required, tanker endorsement preferred
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Must be able to report to Watford City, ND daily at required schedule time

Physical requirements and working conditions

  • Vacation Time: 0-2 full years earn 4 hours per pay period = 96 hours per year
  • Sick Time: 4 hours earned per pay period = 96 hours per year
  • Retirement Main Plan - County contributes 9.26%, Employee contribute 1%-3% - County will match Public Safety Plan - Employee contributes 1.5%, County matches 16.54%
  • Certified Law Enforcement Officers (Deputies/Corrections) Flex Accounts Tax-free dollars set aside each month, up to $3,200.00 annually for medical expenses $5,000.00 annually may be set aside for day care expenses
  • Life Insurance: McKenzie County provides $12,000.00 life insurance. Additional coverage available at a discounted rate.
  • Supplemental Insurance: MetLife plans may be purchased for an additional charge.
