Public Safety Officer - Full Time Second Shift

About the role

The Public Safety Officer, under the supervision of the Public Safety Lt., patrols assigned areas of the Medical Center to identify and/or respond to unsafe conditions and emergencies. In addition, the officer will answer calls for service pertaining to unauthorized or illegal activity within the building or campus grounds. All officers respond to emergencies and calls to assist with combative patients or visitors, fire alarms, infant/child abduction, active shooter, and other critical incidents.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine inspections for hazards and unusual situations, lock or unlock doors.
• Handle trespassing issues, property receipt and issue, deceased patient transport, and contraband searches in patient rooms.
• Test and inspect Public Safety and safety equipment throughout the campus monthly.
• Document all rounds, write incident reports, and submit them by the end of the shift.
• Use the RMS Public Safety incident computer-based system and the VH Risk Qual System proficiently.
• Communicate information confidentially using appropriate methods.
• Correct problems or write work orders for safety-related issues; inspect fire extinguishers and eye wash stations.
• Conduct or assist in Environment of Care Rounds and other safety inspections.
• Test and check alarm systems (fire, infant abduction, medical gas, generator) and monitor camera systems.
• Investigate reports of lost or damaged property and criminal activity; assist law enforcement with custody individuals.
• Respond to AirCare landings and takeoffs.
• Maintain a strong working knowledge of the facility, campus grounds, and related buildings.
• Analyze and coordinate responses to all alarms on the property; provide physical safety at the command location.
• Inspect buildings and doors to ensure they are opened on time and secured after business hours.
• Pick up and deliver cash deposits to the cashier’s office.
• Provide courteous and professional assistance to the public, including directions and escorts.
• Respond to emergency calls (fire, biological, mass casualty, hospital lockdown, radiation emergencies, active shooter) promptly and with sound judgment.
• Assist with transporting patients to Behavioral Health Services (BHS) and monitor ECO/TDO patients.
• Intervene in disputes involving patients, visitors, or families to maintain order and provide assistance to staff with aggressive individuals.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• One year of previous experience in law enforcement, public safety, college security, or fire departments is preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) - AHA approved required prior to completion of orientation.
• International Association for Healthcare Public Safety and Security Basic Exam within 1 year required.
• ASP baton, Handcuff, OC Foam Spray, and aggression management training within 6 months required.

• Good public relations and communication skills; ability to interact with individuals of varying backgrounds and ethnicities.
• Ability to work with individuals with special needs, including age or mental capacity considerations.
• Compassionate, helpful, and able to ease pain and suffering.
• Ability to think quickly, apply common sense, local, state, and federal laws, and VH policies to solve problems.
• Available for duty assignment at any Valley Health System facility (assignments may be temporary or permanent).
• Ability to work alternate shifts, flex schedules, holidays, and weekends.

Pay

$18.59 - $24.16 per hour.
