About the Role

Under the direct supervision of the Public Safety Coordinator, the Public Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of all persons and property on the Guilford College campus. This individual serves as a strong advocate for exemplifying a proactive approach to crime prevention and educating faculty, staff, and students on safety. The officer must be able to think and work independently at times and must be a problem solver with strong leadership and decision-making skills.

Responsibilities

  • Understands, follows, and enforces Guilford College policies, rules, and regulations, as well as all campus security, safety, and emergency procedures.
  • Coordinates and fosters positive working relationships with all members of the campus community and emergency services (police, fire, ambulance), serving as the on-scene liaison.
  • Responds to all calls for service and emergencies (medical & fire), provides escorts, and is responsible for locking and unlocking buildings in a timely manner.
  • Conducts regular foot patrols of the interior and exterior of campus buildings and monitors campus grounds and roadways.
  • Performs patrols of the campus (foot, golf cart, security vehicle) and enforces traffic and parking regulations as needed.
  • Reviews, understands, and communicates pertinent information via the general information log book.
  • Completes incident reports and documents events occurring during the shift, reporting security, safety, health, and fire hazards to appropriate personnel.
  • Works closely with Campus Life staff to respond to student incidents and emergencies.
  • Notifies the Director and Campus Life administrators of after-hours emergency situations as needed.
  • Participates in Public Safety/Campus Life training on procedures, protocols, and incident response.
  • Engages in community outreach and program implementation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • Minimum of two years of related work experience in security, campus security, or law enforcement preferred.
  • Experience in college or university campus security is a plus.
  • College degree in a related field preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and some holidays.

Schedule

Full-time, 3rd shift: 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM, Monday through Friday.

At this time, Guilford College is only able to employ individuals authorized to work and perform services in North Carolina.
