Public Safety Dispatcher
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, identifies and dispatches appropriate law enforcement, fire, and emergency service units, gathers and relays critical information; complies with Police and Fire Department policies and procedures to assure the safety and the public.
SUPERVISION
This position has no supervisory responsibility.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Answers incoming emergency and non-emergency calls; projecting a positive image and support of the Town’s organizations.
- Interviews callers and gathers details; prioritizes calls for service and determines appropriate personnel to respond.
- Dispatches calls for service; relays pertinent information to law enforcement and fire department officers in a concise manner; providing information and assistance to the public within scope of authority.
- Provides detailed call information to official personnel as needed.
- Maintains status and awareness of Police patrol unit and fire department apparatus locations.
- Monitors message traffic and relays information to police and fire officers.
- Enters emergency assistance calls into computer aided dispatch incident logs.
- Inputs information into the ACJIS & NCIC computer system. Maintains records and files.
- Contacts other law enforcement and fire agencies for additional information and resources as needed, relaying pertinent information regarding incidents.
- Notifies key Town personnel on critical incidents.
- Fulfills all other related duties, as assigned.
Education And Experience Required
- High school diploma or GED plus two (2) years general office/clerical/computer experience involving substantial public contact.
- Certificate to operate the AZ Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIC) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer system; or be able to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire.
- Pass a background investigation by NCIC.
- Ability to obtain Basic Communications Dispatch Certificate.
- Computer Skills: Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook E-Mail, AZ Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIC), National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer system, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Moderately proficient in internet search engines.
Other Ability
- To pass a background investigation by NCIC.
- To obtain Basic Communications Dispatch Certificate.
- To work schedule required to fulfill duties of position.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to have sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits effective communications and discern emergency/alarm systems.
- Regularly required to sit and speak through a telephone or radio device for long periods of time, with attention to detail.
- May be required to occasionally carry, push/pull objects and materials up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, ability to adjust focus, and manual dexterity in combination with eye/hand coordination.
- Office noise level is usually moderate.
