About the role
The Public Safety Communications Dispatcher is a full-time, on-site role located in Redwood City, CA. This position is responsible for receiving and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls, gathering critical information, and dispatching appropriate police and other public safety resources.
Responsibilities
- Receiving and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls
- Gathering critical information and dispatching appropriate police and other public safety resources
- Operating communications equipment
- Maintaining accurate records of calls and responses
- Monitoring radio traffic to support field units
- Providing callers with calm, clear instructions
- Cooking with law enforcement and other emergency services
- Following established protocols to ensure timely and effective responses
- Working various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability in Emergency Medical Dispatch and Emergency Services protocols to support callers and first responders during critical incidents
- Strong skills in Dispatching and radio operations, including prioritizing calls and coordinating multiple units in dynamic situations
- Effective Communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to remain calm, empathetic, and professional under pressure
- Familiarity with Law Enforcement procedures and terminology, or the ability to learn and apply these quickly in a public safety environment
- High level of attention to detail, multitasking, and data entry accuracy while using computer-aided dispatch and related systems
- Able to pass background checks, drug screening, and any required psychological or medical evaluations
- Availability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Additional coursework or certification in public safety communications, criminal justice, or related fields is beneficial
- Prior experience in public safety dispatch, customer service in high-stress environments, or emergency call centers is preferred but not required
