Public Health Nurse 2 - School Health Supervisor

About the Role

The School Health Program of the Metro Public Health Department is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic individual to provide program planning and direct supervision of nurses in specific clusters of schools within the Metro Nashville Public School system in Davidson County. This role supports families and the community by delivering nursing services to students in Nashville and Davidson County.

Responsibilities

  • Provides program planning and direct supervision of nurses in specific clusters of schools.
  • Assures the safe and effective delivery of nursing services in the school environment.
  • Assists with patient problem-solving and instructs, advises, and mentors new staff in department practices and procedures.
  • Identifies factors impacting service delivery and develops and implements improvement plans.
  • Works under the supervision of a division director who defines overall objectives and priorities.
  • Provides input toward School Health policies and procedures.
  • Serves as a public health resource for school and community services.
  • Attends student support team meetings (Individual Education Plan (IEP) and 504 meetings) and helps develop appropriate student health plans.
  • Initiates referral processes to appropriate programs and agencies within and outside the MPHD.
  • Performs other duties and special projects targeting healthy children and school environments.
  • Provides nursing staff with basic technical support for computer software issues related to the program’s electronic charting system.
  • Assists with recruitment of new school health staff.
  • Conducts performance evaluations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from a state-approved school of nursing with three (3) years of nursing experience, two (2) years of which are public-health-related preferred; or Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree from a state-approved school of nursing with three (3) years of nursing experience, two (2) years of which are public-health-related preferred.
  • Diploma or Associate’s Degree in nursing combined with four (4) years of nursing experience, two (2) years of which are public-health-related, may be considered.
  • Licensed or eligible for RN licensure in Tennessee.
  • All public health nurses must complete an MPHD-approved Certificate in Public Health as a condition of continued employment.
  • Valid driver’s license, use of personal vehicle, and maintenance of valid personal vehicle insurance as required by Tennessee Law.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multicultural communities.

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply, however, MPHD is not currently sponsoring individuals through employment-based immigration programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a state-approved school of nursing.
  • General pediatric experience.
