About the Role

The ODH Public Health Laboratory is seeking a passionate Public Health Genetics Consultant to collaborate with hospitals and clinicians, improving the health of newborns in Ohio. In this role, you will serve as a vital bridge between specialized laboratory data, healthcare providers, and families, ensuring at-risk infants receive prompt diagnosis and care.

Responsibilities

  • Explain newborn screening results and recommended follow-up actions.
  • Help plan, develop, and evaluate program activities to ensure compliance with state rules and regulations.
  • Design and present training sessions for medical professionals and the community, while contributing to state advisory committees.
  • Stay current with newborn screening literature, track policy developments, and maintain detailed program reports and case assessments.

Requirements

Candidates must meet one of the following qualifications:

  • 42 months of experience as a healthcare professional (e.g., Pediatric Registered Dietitian, Registered Nurse) in a pediatric setting, including experience in program evaluation, developing and presenting training programs, and collaborating with coalitions or groups; must provide own transportation.
  • 42 months of experience in genetics consultation in health, public health, or a related field, including experience in program evaluation, developing and presenting training programs, and collaborating with coalitions or groups; must provide own transportation.
  • Completion of graduate core coursework in Genetic Counseling; 6 months of experience providing direct service and/or consultation in a public health, community health, hospital, or clinic setting, including experience in program evaluation, developing and presenting training programs, and collaborating with coalitions or groups; must provide own transportation.
  • Equivalent of the minimum class qualifications noted above.

Qualifications

Applications meeting the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Graduate or advanced degree in Genetic Counseling, Biochemistry, or Medical Science.
  • Clinical experience in genetics, endocrinology, biochemistry, or neonatology.
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant-Certified, or Registered Dietitian.
  • Experience providing medical technical assistance or educational consultation.
  • Experience designing and performing data analysis and producing reports.
  • Experience developing educational materials and presenting trainings.
  • Experience performing medical case management.
  • Experience monitoring quality assurance indicators and documenting organizational compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Proficiency with computer software (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Electronic Medical Records).

Unusual Working Conditions

  • Selected candidates must be vaccinated for Hepatitis-B (proof required before the first day of work).
  • Exposure to biofluids, tissue, sharps, caustic or toxic chemicals, and/or explosives.
  • May work varying hours; must provide own transportation.

Qualified candidates not yet fully vaccinated for Hepatitis-B must be willing to receive the vaccination (provided at no cost post-hire) and may have temporarily limited work duties to prevent exposure.

Pay

$32.69 per hour (12 on the 1199 Pay Range Schedule).

Schedule

Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The ODH Public Health Laboratory supports the agency, local health departments, and clinicians across Ohio in disease outbreak investigations, public health emergencies, and disease identification to aid in treatment and prevention. Services include screening for diseases of public health interest, reference support for infectious agents, epidemiological investigations, and oversight of the state’s alcohol breath testing program.
