Public Health Educator

About the role

This position focuses on developing, delivering, and evaluating health education and wellness programs for employees, dependents, and retirees. The role involves conducting research, creating educational materials, leading presentations, and collaborating with stakeholders to promote healthy behaviors and reduce health risks.

Responsibilities

• Outline and implement calendars of events targeting health risks for each work shift.
• Leverage health plans, wellness programs, and community resources to support employee health.
• Conduct presentations on health prevention topics such as active living, healthy eating, stress reduction, and tobacco cessation.
• Collect data and perform research to develop, pretest, and evaluate health-related education techniques and materials.
• Schedule and present health education programs and seminars for employee, dependent, and retiree populations.
• Prepare or assist with health education pamphlets, visual aids, and special projects.
• Assist with the activities of the Employee Wellness Advisory Council (EWAC).
• Collaborate with Wellness Ambassadors and other stakeholders to disseminate wellness information.
• Guide departmental site contacts in planning, administering, and developing wellness programs to create a culture of wellness, engage high participation, improve health status, and reduce health risks and costs.
• Utilize behavior change methods, such as Motivational Interviewing, to encourage healthy lifestyle habits and preventative care.
• Implement customized strategic wellness plans for city departments, including goals and action plans.
• Engage participants in modifying high-risk lifestyles and applying behavior change principles to maintain healthy behaviors.
• Provide reports on participation, activities, and results.
• Assist in the planning, design, implementation, delivery, and evaluation of comprehensive corporate health promotion programs, including health screenings, awareness events, classes, and health communications.
• Lead special projects and initiatives.
• Track and report performance measures, including events delivered, participation, and outcomes.
• Provide coverage for the City of Houston Wellness Center and assist with day-to-day operations as assigned.
• Meet operational expectations and goals set by the department executive team.
• Maintain current licensure in good standing and pursue professional development.
• Communicate proactively and effectively with participants, peers, and supervisors.

Requirements

• Education: Bachelor's degree in Education, Behavioral Science, Public Health, or a related field.
• Experience: No experience is required. Directly related professional experience in Public Health, Education, or a closely related field may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. Experience in fitness facility management, exercise physiology, or a closely related field is preferred.
• License: Valid Class C Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's driving policy.

Preferences

• Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) certification.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish).
• Flexible shifts, including occasional coverage of any of the 3 shifts.
• Ability to travel approximately 25% (may include overnight travel).
• Strong background in motivational interviewing and stages of change related to behavior modification programming.
• Ability to develop promotional program materials and instruct health education programs.
• Positive attitude, professionalism, and self-motivation with excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to engage groups and work with diverse populations.
• Experience providing one-on-one and small-group health coaching.
• Strong conceptual, strategic, and visionary skills.
• Knowledge of ROI outcomes and awareness of sensitive issues in government settings.
• Strong coordination, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Master’s degree preferred with a minimum of 1 year of related experience.

$20.00 - $22.00 per hour.

Full-time, 8-hour shift, Monday to Friday.
